In an effort to reduce smartphone theft and the criminal exploitation of stolen devices, the Indian government has released new regulations. In order to prevent the sale of counterfeit smartphones, the government has mandated that all mobile phone makers register the unique IMEI number of each smartphone produced in India with the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction (ICDR) site.

The government of India has issued a notification requiring importers to register the international mobile equipment identity number of mobile phones imported into the country for sale, testing, research, or any other purpose with the Indian Counterfeited Device Restriction portal (https://icdr.ceir.gov.in). It’s important to remember that in 2021, the government began using the ICDR system to issue IMEI certifications for imported mobile phones.
