Philip Andre “Mickey” Rourke Jr. was born in Schenectady, New York, on September 16, 1952.

He is the son of Annette and Philip Andre Rourke, Sr. His siblings are Patricia, his younger sister, and Joey, his younger brother.

When Mickey was six years old, his amateur bodybuilder father abandoned the family.

Following her divorce, Rourke’s mother wed Eugene Addis, a police officer with five boys, and relocated her family to South Florida.

The year 1971 saw Rourke graduate from Miami Beach Senior High School.

While still in school, he trained in self-defence at the Boys Club of Miami.

He loved athletics. He additionally pursued amateur boxing training at the 5th Street Gym in Miami Beach, Florida.

When he was 12 years old and a 51 kg flyweight, he won his first boxing match.

In 1969, he sparred with Luis Rodriguez, the former world welterweight champion.


He sustained brain damage from the sparring session.

In 1971, he agreed to take a small role in the school play “The Serpent.”

He never took part in any other school plays since boxing captured his attention better.

At the Florida Golden Gloves in 1971, he had a second head injury (concussion), and doctors advised him to take a year off from boxing.

At that time, his amateur boxing record read: 27 wins (3 losses), and 17 knockouts.
