Box Office Breakdown: ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Brings in $26.5 Million on Thursday, ‘Air’ Follows with $2.4 Million!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a blockbuster!
As Easter weekend approaches, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has continued to do well at the box office. The animated movie, which was made by Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal, is still doing very well. On Thursday, it made a huge $26.5 million.
It has now made a total of $58.2 million in the United States. At this rate, the plumber with the mustache should have won more than $150 million in his first five days on the big screen in the United States. The movie has made $62.5 million overseas, bringing the total amount of money it has made from ticket sales to $120.7 million.
Amazon Studios’ “Air,” a shoe story about how Nike got Michael Jordan to become its most successful brand ambassador, was the other big new release of the week. It made $2.4 million on Thursday. The sneaker story has now made just under $6 million in the United States.
The movie, which stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Chris Tucker, and Viola Davis, is expected to make $16 million in its first five days in theaters. That’s not much compared to Mario, but it’s a good number considering how hard it has been for movies for adults to do well.

Affleck directs the movie and also stars in it with Damon, who he worked with in “Good Will Hunting.” “Air” cost $90 million to make, so Amazon will have to sell a lot of paper towels to make up for that.
In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Chris Pratt gives Mario’s voice, Charlie Day gives Luigi’s voice, Anya Taylor-Joy gives Princess Peach’s voice, and Jack Black gives Bowser’s voice.
Critics had mixed things to say about the movie, but Variety’s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman called “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” “sheer animated fun” and said, “Mario’s second time on film is the charm.” That’s a reference to the terrible 1993 live-action version, which starred Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi and is generally thought to be one of the worst movies ever made.
It scared Nintendo, so for the next 30 years, while it got over the bad reviews, it didn’t make many movies based on its games. Chris Meledandri, who runs Illumination and is in charge of the Minions and other animated series, is in charge of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” But Shigeru Miyamoto, who came up with the Mushroom Kingdom, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda, was also involved in making the movie.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” cost $100 million to make, which is not much compared to other movies of the same kind, which can cost twice as much.
Amazon is changing the way it sells things with “Air.” Amazon used to put all of its movies in theaters, but in recent years, most of them have gone straight to streaming.
But “Air” will only be shown in theaters for an undetermined amount of time before it comes out on Prime Video. Amazon has hinted that it may put more money into movies that come out in theaters, which is good news for exhibitors.
