As avid bingers of the series already know, Netflix’s Virgin River is precisely the type of noninvasive (yet exceptionally soapy) romantic drama that will offer only enough gentle escapism to keep your brain occupied throughout the long winter ahead. The first season of the series saw Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge) running away from her painful past in Los Angeles to become a midwife and nurse practitioner in the miniature (and literary ) northern California city of Virgin River–only to discover that not only was unable to escape her past but also that small city living comes with more than its fair share of big drama.
Against all odds, the second season, which was released Nov. 27, somehow outdid the first concerning breakups, makeups, and incredible reveals, finally ending in a cliffhanger so shocking that it ought to be a federal offense to finish a season like that. A third season is crucial–and the sooner, the better. Here’s everything we know up to now about the next season of Virgin River, from the potential release date to what the crew and cast have said concerning its subject matter.
Has Virgin River been renewed for season three?
Yes! On Friday, December 18, Netflix announced that it would be renewing Virgin River for season 3. All the significant characters of season two will reunite and will be combined by Zibby Allen and Stacey Farber. Allen will play with Jack’s sister, while Farber will perform Lilly’s daughter.
The show is based on Robyn Carr’s book show of the same name, which includes a casual 21 installments, so there is a lot of subject material to mine for future seasons. Showrunner Sue Tenney stated as much in a recent interview with TVLine, noting that even if the series strays from its source material in time to time, it’ll always end up in which Carr intended. “Finally, how I look at the series is that we’re likely to have as many seasons as we get. And once we reach that last season, we need them to be where [Carr] has them,” she said–and let us just say that season two didn’t exactly end how the books did, therefore that there must be many more episodes in the shop.
What’s on Netflix also discovered a manufacturing record back in July that signaled that the third season of the series was slated to begin filming sometime between August and December of this year, implying the showrunners have already privately been awarded the go-ahead by the powers that be at Netflix. That is exactly what occurred with the second season–filming began in September 2019, before the first season had aired, and ended in mid-December, a few days before the series has been officially renewed.
Release Date of Season 3
As far as now no confirmed release date is out yet. However, it’s highly expected to release in November or December of 2021. Productions have started and the shooting will soon complete.
What will happen in the third season?
Season 3 of Virgin River has its work cut out for it since now two ended with a minimum of one cliffhanger for almost every character. The next batch of episodes will have to address–spoiler alert! –whether Mel and Jack are back together for good, the medical news Doc Mullins was going to talk about Hope before they had been interrupted by a surprise re-engagement celebration, how Preacher decides between staying in Virgin River or taking that new chef job in San Francisco, and, most urgently, who took Jack (and, of course, if he even survives).
If it appears to be a tall order, fear not: Tenney, the showrunner, has all but guaranteed that every unanswered issue will be addressed in the third period which will also, in authentic rom-dram style, open up many new cans of worms for the occupants of Virgin River. In an interview with TVLine, she noticed that the question of who shot Jack is going to be explored throughout season three, with the mystery potentially continuing to future seasons. Tenney also theorized that the next season won’t pick up right where season two left, immediately after Mel found Jack bleeding from a gunshot on the floor of the pub, warning viewers to anticipate”a bigger time leap than we’d between seasons one and two.”
