The Last Kingdom Season 5

Here we go, The Last Kingdom Lovers! The show’s highly-anticipated yield is on the horizon and shortly, we will arrive at season 5. Netflix has verified that the mega-popular series will be back for the fifth season. As of right now, it’s only a matter of if.

For those unfamiliar, here’s the assumption, in a nutshell.

What is The Last Kingdom about?

From the BBC, this award-winning British historical fiction series was originally based on Bernard Cornwell’s book series The Saxon Stories. Following two seasons on BBC Two, Netflix picked it up for seasons 4, 3, and the upcoming fifth.

Netflix describes the adapted plot as:

In terms of season 5, here is what we know about if The Last Kingdom will inevitably return.

The Last Kingdom season 5 release date on Netflix: When will it premiere?

Seasons one to four have all arrived sporadically.

The first two, which aired on the BBC, hit screens in October 2015 and March 2017 respectively.

The series was subsequently snapped up by Netflix, with season three landing in November 2018 and four to April 26, 2020.

Bearing that in mind, it is hard to predict if it will return, but April 2021 would have been our educated guess if not for Everything That is Happening Today.

There’s an opportunity, however, it could be mid-late 2021.

But rest assured, the cast and crew are hard at work.

“We are going to start shooting towards the end of this year under quite strict COVID-19 guidelines, naturally,” Dreymon said in October 2020. “We’re very lucky to be able to operate right now.”

Who will be in the cast of The Last Kingdom season 5?

There are few verified details about who is returning for season five, but we do understand that Alexander Dreymon will be returning to lead The Last Kingdom cast once more as Uhtred of Bebbanburg.

Check out our post on The Last Kingdom’s history to learn more about how Uhtred’s story ties in with factual events and imperial figures.

Emily Cox is also likely to reprise her role as Uhtred’s youth friend-turned-nemesis Brida, who was last seen giving birth alone in the woods.

Mark Rowley, Ewan Mitchell, and Arnas Fedaravičius have turned into real fan favorites as Uhtred’s loyal allies, so here is hoping that they stay by his side for many more adventures to come.

On the Viking facet, Haesten (Jeppe Beck Laursen) remains living against all odds, while Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) has booted up with Uhtred’s daughter, Stiorra (Ruby Hartley).

In Winchester, season four left the Saxon royals in a state of turmoil, so expect to see more of Timothy Innes as King Edward, Millie Brady as Lady Aethelflaed, and perhaps Eliza Butterworth as Lady Aelswith (more on this below).

Adrian Schiller has confirmed he will be reprising his role as the cruel and devious Bethlehem, however, isn’t positive that he’ll make it from another season alive.

A number of these actors appeared in the video observing the year five renewal, which implies they will indeed be reprising their roles.

The Last Kingdom season five might have one significant celebrity cameo, as fellow Netflix celebrity Ricky Gervais has repeatedly expressed his love for its epic collection.

In Junehe tweeted to the show’s official Twitter accounts, dressing in his best Viking costume and stating: “Hurry up with the next season and send me to Valhalla!”

Given that Gervais has lots of contacts with Netflix from creating his hit comedy series Following Life, it is not impossible he could get an enjoyable cameo at another batch of episodes.

A video shared with social media on Christmas Eve 2020 appears to provide a notion that cast members will return for season five, with Dreymon, Cox, Butterworth, Innes, Brady, Hartley, Schiller, and Sigurðarson among the familiar faces who took part.

The clip puts a different The Last Kingdom-inspired spin on the traditional festive poem was The Night Before Christmas (also referred to as A Visit From St Nicholas).
