The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu’s flagship first show, is on its way to a fourth season, enlarging the ancestral world that Man Booker Award-winning novelist Margaret Atwood created within her 1985 book of the same name. The series takes place in a near-future America, now known as Gilead, where the autocratic government welcomes its female citizens into strict societal roles based on their prosperity and fertility. Over the past several decades, awarded how amazingly prescient it all feels, The Handmaid’s Tale has become so integrated into real-life American political discourse that it is not unusual to see girls dressed as handmaids at congressional hearings and other political events.
Hulu declared during the series’ third season that The Handmaid’s Tale had been picked up for Season 4–maybe not much of a surprise, given its dedicated fanbase and fame. While there is a good deal of time before the fourth season strikes screens, that doesn’t mean we don’t understand anything about what to expect going forward. Here’s what we know about The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 release date: When will it air?
The series will premiere this season after several delays due to Covid-19.
“We were just two weeks into shooting once we shut down, so we didn’t get a great deal in the can,” star Elisabeth Moss (June) informed Deadline at May 2020.
Moss also offered up another reason as to why this year is taking longer than preceding ones: “We are making it a bit of a larger season this year. We’re stretching the limits of our capacities, production-wise, and we are on the move a good deal.”
It has also been confirmed that a fifth season is on the cards, with The Hollywood Reporter confirming the show’s return through showrunner Bruce Miller.
It is not been confirmed how many episodes five will contain, or if it’ll land on Hulu, however, we’ll update this feature once we have more information.
Who is in the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale season 4?
There has been no news yet about who will be returning for the fourth set of The Handmaid’s Tale.
On the other hand, the teaser trailer reveals the majority of the top cast is expected to return for another season.
This is expected to include Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy, and Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia.
Other potential returning cast members comprise O.T. Fagbenle as Luke, Alexis Bledel as Emily, and Joseph Fiennes as Commander Waterford.
But, Rita (played by Amanda Brugel) will not be returning after the celebrity supported the news to Harper’s Bazaar.
Hulu has confirmed McKenna Grace will be joining the cast as Mrs. Keyes, who’s a whip-smart spouse in the republic of Gilead.
What Is The Plot For The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4?
It is a safe bet the new season will pick up shortly after June secured the children’s safe voyage to Canada. Serena and Fred are still being held captive, and the story will probably show their fate. There was also that subplot about Nick possibly having lied about his identity and June’s future in Gilead.
In an interview, Whitford was asked whether Commander Lawrence would acquire pre-Gilead flashback scenes a la Aunt Lydia.
It’s not a confirmation that we will see Lawrence’s past, but it would be interesting. For now, everything is up in the air until more details about Season 4 have been revealed.
