Everything we know about season six
The moment has been one of anxiety for Peaky Blinders fans since the successful British series ended its fifth season in 2019.
Like many of our favorite series, the pandemic changed what the BBC had already planned for English mobster Tommy Shelby and his family. As a result, filming for the sixth season ended up being delayed by almost a year.
But things are not over yet for everyone’s favorite bad boy in Birmingham, and little by little we are starting to get new information about season six.
So, what are the official news of the series? Thinking about it, we separated all the official information for the fans and you find below.
On January 18, 2021, Peaky Blinders‘ official Twitter account released the news that the series had officially started recording its sixth season.
While there is still no word on when the Shelby family will return to our screens, considering that series director Anthony Byrne spent sixteen months working in season five, it seems unlikely that we will see the new season before the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.
Our best guess is that the premiere will only take place in the first quarter of 2022 in the United States. In Brazil, on Netflix, only in the second half of 2022.
Will the sixth season be the last?
To the fans ‘surprise, in January 2021, series creator Steven Knight confirmed that Season 6 will be Peaky Blinders ‘ final season – but with one caveat.
Instead of ending the series with the sixth season, Knight said the BAFTA-winning drama will continue “in a different way” later on. Then he confirmed to Deadline that the series will end with a movie.
“Our plans have been changed, due to the current situation. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a film, ”he told the publication. “And this is what will happen.”
In 2018, Knight told fans that they intended to do a seventh season and possibly more, saying ” My ambition is to make it a family story between two wars, so I always wanted to end the first air raid siren in 1939. ”
At the time, he was already excited about the possibility of a film, but he said that he “ would not like to do it in the end, maybe between seasons ”.
Circumstances have changed those plans, with the film being announced potentially taking the place of the previously planned seventh season.
Cast: who will be there and who will not be back?
Actress Charlie Murphy confirmed in March that she will not reprise her role as a real-life union leader and communist activist Jessie Eden next season. The character was last seen at the end of season 5 when Tommy saved her from being arrested just before his failed attempt to murder Oswald Mosley.
Some fan theories suggest that she may have been the person who cheated on Tommy in Season 5, causing her plans for Mosley to fail, but the news that Murphy will not return makes it seem increasingly unlikely.
On the other hand, there will be some new actors joining the cast, such as James Frecheville, and Black Mirror star Amber Anderson, who revealed that she will appear in the final season of the series in an undisclosed role.
Of course, the usual cast members will also return. Then we’ll have Cillian Murphy back as Tommy Shelby, Helen McCrory as Polly Gray, Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, Finn Cole as Michael Gray, and Sophie Rundle as Ada Thorne.
Spoilers: what’s next?
In a Cannes festival masterclass, creator Steven Knight offered fans some insight into the future of Tommy Shelby; specifically, where he sees the character ending the moment the series comes to an end.
“Tommy Shelby – who starts as a nihilist, looking out only for his family member – will be redeemed and become good, ” he explained. “I want to take him on this journey with the person we saw [in season 1], for the person he will become in 1939.”
He also noted that he originally introduced the concept of the series to a channel 25 years ago, but that he was happy that it was not produced until 2012 when the technology advanced enough to allow for the high production values of the series.
Sophie Rundle, who plays Tommy’s sister, Ada Shelby, recently told Digital Spy that the next season will not last long in terms of narrative time. “I think [creator] Steve [Knight] said this is going to be the last one, so you can imagine – it will all be on fire. It’s always, you know, really rock and roll. ” She added: “Ada is as tough as ever. She always is. ”
Peaky Blinders’ fifth season came to an emotional end when Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) seemed to lose control of the world. In addition to not killing Oswald Mosely (Sam Clafin), the character was betrayed by his cousin, Michael Gray (Finn Cole). But in a new interview, it looks like Tommy’s problems are just beginning.
