If you plan on seeing the film adaptation of “You Will Be Found” when it comes out this fall, start practicing now everything you need to know about the big screen version of Dear Evan Hansen.

Dear Evan Hansen (2021) : Release Date

On September 24, 2021, the film will be released in theatres for the first time. However, Dear Evan Hansen premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 9th.

Dear Evan Hansen (2021) :  Cast

Although it will be difficult to top the award-winning original Broadway cast, the film adaptation has assembled a strong cast. Hansen’s longtime crush, Zoe, is played by actress Kaitlyn Dever.

After Zoe’s brother, Hansen’s classmate, commits suicide, the two become closer. Dever is most recognized for her parts in the Olivia Wilde-directed coming-of-age film Booksmart and the Netflix miniseries Unbelievable, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.

Amandla Stenberg, an actress, is also in the cast. Alana, another member of Hansen’s high school class, will be played by Stenberg, who is recognized for her work in The Hate U Give and Everything, Everything.

The role has been expanded from the stage production, with Stenberg co-writing her own musical number. Alana is “a cheery high school senior whose social-media savvy masks a deeper loneliness and isolation, and whose response to the death of a classmate ignites a movement,” according to Variety.

It’s also worth mentioning the film’s behind-the-scenes crew. The film was directed by Stephen Chbosky, who is also a novelist. Chbosky directed the 2017 film Wonder, starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson, and wrote the popular young adult novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The script was written by Steve Levenson, who also wrote the Tony-winning book for the musical.

Executive producing the adaptation are Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote all of Dear Evan Hansen’s lyrics.

Dear Evan Hansen (2021) :  Plot

Dear Evan Hansen is a film about a young man with a social anxiety disorder who, in order to connect with his friends, fabricates a relationship with a deceased student in order to become closer to the boy’s family. When a classmate commits suicide, Evan Hansen finds himself in the middle of the tragedy.

Evan pretends to be excellent friends with the boy’s devastated family in an ill-advised attempt to console them. To “prove” their connection, he creates a phony email account, and when a fake suicide letter goes viral, Evan becomes the accidental face of a viral film about loneliness and friendship.

Evan is dragged farther and deeper into the lie as his social currency rises. In comparison to his “bright new family,” his relationship with his biological mother deteriorates. He finally gets the girl of his dreams, and best of all, he is no longer invisible.

Evan must eventually make a choice: will he give in to the fantasy he’s built, or will he bite the bullet and risk losing everything he’s ever desired? Dear Evan Hansen has been an instant smash among theatergoers everywhere, thanks to a fast-paced new score by fresh young songwriting pair Pasek and Paul (not to mention a few Tony wins).

Dear Evan Hansen (2021) :  Trailer

The film is based on the stage musical of the same name, which has a book by Steven Levenson and music and lyrics by Pasek and Paul, who have won Oscars, Grammys, and Tony Awards. The idea came from the latter two, who had comparable high school backgrounds. “There were a lot of kids that died when I was in high school, and the same thing happened in Justin’s school as well,” Pasek told The Hollywood Reporter. “Also, 9/11 happened when we were in high school,” Paul continued.

And then there was Columbine, which occurred when we were in eighth grade. We noticed that many people in our generation, who were young at the time, were quite lonely and in dire need of connection. It’s only become worse since the introduction of social media. However, I believe we were both struck by how desperate people were to find any reason to gather together, whether it was a tragedy or not. When tragedy struck, however, it became a sort of permission-giving moment for many people to rationalize their pain and find each other. So that’s something we wanted to look into.”
