Buzz Lightyear Gets an Origin Story With Chris Evans in Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Trailer

Chris Evans is heading to the farthest reaches of the universe.

In Pixar’s upcoming origin narrative for everyone’s favourite “Toy Story” character, suitably dubbed “Lightyear,” Captain America himself will voice Buzz Lightyear. On Wednesday, Pixar debuted the first trailer for the animated, family-friendly sci-fi film on “Good Morning America.”

“Lightyear” does not, however, follow Tim Allen’s renowned character’s toy-sized interstellar adventures. The 2022 film, on the other hand, introduces the “real-life” human astronaut whose exploits inspired the “Toy Story” toy line.

We see the actual Lightyear suit up for what will undoubtedly be a perilous and daring space voyage in the teaser. He enters a space shuttle, which is being watched by a ground control staff as it blasts off into the vast universe.

In the final seconds of the video, Lightyear visits exotic planets, learns about space travel from an instructional robot, and gazes up at his iconic green-and-white space suit to the tune of David Bowie’s “Starman.”

From the original 1995 hit film “Toy Story” to the 2019 sequel “Toy Story 4,” Allen voiced Buzz Lightyear in four films in the “Toy Story” franchise. Evans is transitioning from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Pixar’s headquarters after hanging up his shield as Captain America.

The spy thriller “The Gray Man,” which reunites him with “Avengers” filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, and Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence later this year, are also on his future schedule.

“Lightyear,” which was first unveiled over a year ago at Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, will hit theatres on June 17, 2022. It will be released within a few months after the release of Pixar’s next film, Turning Red,” which debuts on March 11, 2022.
