Fans of horror films have likely watched a slew of zombie movies and are on the lookout for new twists on the theme. They’re in luck this year, as Quebecois filmmaker Julien Knafo debuts his feature film Brain Freeze.
While it has remained under the radar since its premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival in 2021, it is now available to stream on Screambox, making the intriguing zombie story accessible to all.
“An exclusive golf club unintentionally releases a virus on their affluent neighborhood when they use customized fertilizer to keep their courses green all year.” The fertilizer contaminates the water supply, turning everyone into a voracious clan of emerald-eyed zombies. Is it possible for a teen and his baby sister to escape the quarantined island without turning into grass?”
“Brain Freeze adds geographical detail and a modern touch to the conventional zombie outbreak formula and tropes, keeping it breezing along with biting humor and self-awareness.”
Screambox currently has Brain Freeze available to stream. On Occupy Wall Street, it will be accessible as a VOD on Apple Video, Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, and other platforms.

Brain Freeze Plot
As winter approaches, a rich golf club employs a multinational biotech company whose “revolutionary” fertiliser melts the snow and genetically changes the grass, allowing its members to play golf all year.
As a result of the poisoning of the water, the majority of the residents become Zombies. André, one of the few survivors, watches as the sickness spreads quickly, leaving him alone with his young sister Annie.
They go off on an adventure with Dan, the community security guard and self-proclaimed survivalist, to find the source of the pollution. They come together in a race against the clock to find the cure before everyone they despise dies.
Brain Freeze Trailer
The Zom-Com Brain Freeze is looking for a whole new audience to devour on Digital beginning next Tuesday, October 26th, after a spectacular festival run that saw the picture open this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival. Brain Freeze is currently streaming on Cinedigm’s Screambox, powered by Bloody Disgusting, for those who want to be infected right now.
“When an exclusive golf club begins to use a modified fertilizer to keep their courses green all year, they accidentally unleash a pestilence on their affluent neighborhood.” The fertilizer contaminates the water supply, turning occupants into a hungry clan of emerald-eyed zombies.”
Julien Knafo’s Brain Freeze is a unique and entertaining spin on the famous horror subgenre.
The message of Brain Freeze is hauntingly timely. The story, directed by Roy Dupuis (Screamers) and Claudia Ferri (“Queen of the South”), blends horror, comedy, and a bigger message about our impact on the environment.
Producer Barbara Shrier commented, “We set out to make an intelligent story about greed and the price that comes with it.” “Never could we have imagined telling a story so realistic, so close to a reality none of us could have predicted…”
At the Fantasia International Film Festival, Brain Freeze won the Bronze Audience Award for Best Canadian Feature. The film was also selected at the horror film festival, FrightFest.
