The Obscure Life of the Grand Duke of Corsica Plot

Alfred Rott, a cantankerous and talented architect, meets with officials from the Malta Arts Council to discuss a new arts centre he has been commissioned to create. Things start off badly when Alfred talks himself out of a lucrative new job, which is made worse by his recurrent bowl motions. Alfred, a meticulous hand-washer, enjoys some local jazz that night, but is once again snubbed by his peers when approached by an arrogant young jerk.

When Alfred returns to his hotel room later that evening, he discovers a cryptic invitation to a strange event, the purpose of which he quickly deduces. Alfred is given a second invitation to this celebration, which takes place at the Belgian Consulate, by a high-class courtesan named Poppea. As a result, Alfred undertakes an odd assignment for an eccentric billionaire known as the ‘Grand Duke of Corsica.’

Alfred’s first meeting with the eccentric Grand Duke begins shakily, but he is drawn to this strange proposition: the construction of a mausoleum for the man whose body it would eventually hold. As Alfred Rott, who is known for his no-nonsense attitude to work and life, gets to know the Grand Duke better, the two men, who are diametrically opposed in every way, discover common ground on which to collaborate.

Parallel to Alfred and the Grand Duke’s journey, we see scenes from the life of St. Francis of Assisi, whose spiritual crisis has an unforeseen impact on Alfred Rott, despite the fact that they are 800 years apart.

When a fatal malaria outbreak sweeps Malta, causing panic and mayhem, Alfred stays to finish the job he started – a mission that would ultimately transform his life.
