Personal and Professional Life

Carlile was born in Ravensdale, Washington, 30 miles outside of Seattle, on June 1, 1981. Carlile and her brother, Jay, and sister, Tiffany, grew up in the only house for miles, playing in the woods, building forts, and making music. Carlile got bacterial meningitis when she was five years old, and it nearly killed her.

She went into a coma after her heart stopped many times. Carlile grew up in the King County towns of Sumner, Black Diamond, Maple Valley, and Auburn, as well as a brief stint in West Seattle.

Carlile began singing country songs on stage when she was eight years old, after teaching herself to sing as a child. Carlile began playing the guitar and writing songs at the age of fifteen, after performing Rosanne Cash’s “Tennessee Flat Top Box” with her mother, Teresa Carlile.

Catherine Shepherd is the daughter of actor Jack Shepherd, who was born in Hammersmith, London, England in 1975. She received an honorary ballet senior certificate from James Allen’s Girls’ School. She, too, sought an acting career, much like her father.
