The Departed Ending: Why Did Mark Wahlberg (dignam) Kill Matt Damon in The End?

the departed ending

William Monahan wrote and directed Martin Scorsese’s epic crime thriller, The Departed, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006.

Remade from the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs and largely inspired by the real-life Boston Winter Hill Gang; Colin Sullivan, the corrupt FBI agent John Connolly, and Frank Costello, the Irish-American mobster Whitey Bulger are the inspirations for the characters in the film, respectively.

To round things up, the cast also includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, and Mark Wahlberg. There are also cameos from Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, and Vera Farmiga. After the 1995 film The Basketball Diaries, DiCaprio and Wahlberg worked together again on this film.

Boston is the setting for the film. Undercover Massachusetts State Police trooper Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate Irish mob boss Frank Costello’s team, which is planted by Irish mob boss Frank Costello (Nicholson).

Sullivan and Costigan, realizing the gravity of the issue, race against the clock to figure out who the other is before the other party does.

An Explanation of The Ending of The Departed

the departed ending

In the last moments of The Departed, Costigan confronts Sullivan about his secret identity. Costello’s envelope is laying on his desk, making him realize that Costello is the rat. In the aftermath of Costigan’s dramatic departure, it dawns on Sullivan that he has to be the mole.

After that, he purges all police records of Costigan. As a result of this, Costigan finally runs across Madden, who is now staying at Sullivan’s place. He gives her the recordings of Costello and Sullivan that he recorded. Madden is instructed by Costigan to open the evidence if anything happened to him.

In the end, Madden departs Sullivan after listening to the tapes Costigan and Sullivan meet on the rooftop where Queenan was flung off. Arrested: He manages to catch him off-guard and detain him Officer Brown had also been invited to the rooftop by him. Brown knew Costigan from his time in the academy and could vouch for his credibility.

It’s hard to tell who to trust when Costigan is holding a gun to his own head. At gunpoint, Costigan forces Sullivan to go down the elevator and gather evidence. Costigan and Brown are both shot dead by Officer Barrigan when the elevator doors open.

It’s All Over for Rat and Mole

Costello’s second mole, Barrigan, then confesses that he was the second one. Barrigan is killed by Sullivan’s shot. Sullivan, once again, gets the credit and the glory for portraying Barrigan as the rat. Sullivan tries to chat to Madden at Costigan’s funeral, but she ignores him.

Dignam waits for Sullivan when he returns to his room and shoots him in the head, killing him instantly. The camera pans from Sullivan’s bloodied corpse to the window as The Departed finishes. On the window ledge, there is a symbol of the rat Sullivan was, in the form of a rat creeping around.

Rats were the focus of The Departed. An effective infiltration of Costigan and Sullivan’s target organizations was achieved by both rats. However, the film’s main characters are rats, so it’s a cat-and-mouse pursuit in the truest sense. Both of these rats achieve their goals towards the end of The Departed.

They discover each other’s identities. Even when their goals are accomplished, the film continues on. Costello’s mole kills Costigan, and Dignam shoots Sullivan in the back of the head. To make a point, the moment where Sullivan sees the rat through the window is a metaphor for the rodent he was.
