Melissa Etheridge (born Melissa Lou Etheridge on May 29, 1961) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and social activist. It was 1988 when Melissa Etheridge’s self-titled debut album was released and became an underground hit.

Elizabeth (Williamson) Etheridge, a computer consultant, and John Etheridge, an American Constitution teacher at her high school alma mater, Leavenworth High School, were the parents of Etheridge, who was born in Leavenworth, Kansas. In August of 1991, John Etheridge died.

As a child, Etheridge took guitar instruction. While still in high school, she began playing in several local country music bands and eventually earned a high school diploma in 1979. Etheridge performed at Boston clubs while a student at Berklee College of Music. Etheridge dropped out of Berklee after three semesters and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.

“Yes I Am” was released by her in 1993, and it became a commercial success. “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One” were two of the album’s most popular songs, and it spent 138 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.

Family, Friendship, and Personal Legacy

Julie Cypher was Etheridge’s girlfriend for a lengthy period of time. While Cypher was pregnant with Bailey Jean and Beckett with David Crosby’s donated sperm, she underwent artificial insemination and gave birth to two children during this time. Etheridge and Cypher announced their divorce in September 2000.

Etheridge had a relationship with Tammy Lynn Michaels from 2002 to 2010 and had a wedding ceremony. They became parents to identical twins thanks to a sperm donation from an unknown source. They announced their split in 2010.

It was revealed in 2013 that she and her companion Linda Wallen were engaged, and they were married in Montecito, California, on May 31, 2014.
