He’s not gay but look at him.

If they reject homosexual marriage, religious institutions, according to Beto O’Rourke, should lose their tax-exempt status.

If religious organizations oppose same-sex marriage, they should lose their tax-exempt status, said Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic presidential contender. This caused outrage among conservatives.

At a CNN town hall on LGBTQ rights, the former El Paso congressman made the remark. Do you think religious institutions like colleges, churches, and charities should lose their tax-exempt status if they reject same-sex marriage? “, Lemon asked O’Rourke.

A burst of applause erupted as O’Rourke said, “Yes.” “As president, we will make that a priority and stop those who are infringing on the human rights of our fellow Americans.

There can be no reward, no benefit, no tax break for anyone or any institution or organization in America that denies the full human rights and the full civil rights of each of us.”

As with his campaign for a mandatory buyback program for assault rifles following the tragic El Paso incident in August, O’Rourke staked out the politically volatile ground with few allies in the primary field by embracing this position.

On tax-exempt status, he didn’t back down immediately, tweeted his quote on the subject just after he finished at the town hall.

Senate Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) called O’Rourke out for his “extreme intolerance” and “bigoted nonsense” in a statement released on Friday.

First Liberty Institute, a Plano, Texas-based organization, said it was prepared to take legal action if O’Rourke or any future president attempted to implement the idea.

Cory Booker, one of O’Rourke’s key challengers, did not go nearly as far in response to a similar question during a town hall earlier in the day in Los Angeles. As a New Jersey senator, Cory Booker that there must be “consequences for prejudice,” but he refused to say whether he thought religious institutions should lose their tax-exempt status because of their anti-gay marriage views.

An Aleigha Cavalier spokesman said in a statement that “of course Beto was talking to religious institutions who take discriminatory acts.”

In June, O’Rourke published a plan to improve LGBTQ rights. Asked O’Rourke Thursday, Lemon referred to it as saying, “Freedom of religion is a basic value, but it should not be used to discriminate,” citing it.

He earlier called for the National Rifle Association’s tax-exempt status to be revoked in response to a report by U.S. Senate Democrats that it was used as a “foreign asset” by Russia ahead of the 2016 election.

O’Rourke rose to political prominence in 2018 when he live-streamed a 254-county tour of Texas as he ran for the U.S. Senate against Republican incumbent Ted Cruz. Like Bernie Sanders in 2016, he was popular with small-dollar fundraisers and leftist activists.

He started off as a city council member in El Paso, Texas, where he served from 2005 until 2011. An issue that arose during his time on the city council pitted him against his wealthy investor father-in-law and the disgruntled residents and small businesses he had been elected to represent in the city.

El Paso residents were outraged when O’Rourke openly supported his father-in-plan law’s to replace tenements and boarded-up structures in downtown El Paso with restaurants, stores, and an arts path.

In 2018, he decided not to run for re-election to the House and instead ran against Ted Cruz for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Cruz came within a hair’s breadth of victory in Texas, a state that leans heavily Republican. Even though he lost, Beto O’Rourke had done a lot by campaigning so close to a well-established authority figure.

O’Rourke has stated that he is considering a bid for president in 2020.
