thirteen movie ending explained

Thirteen is a 2003 American teen drama film written and directed by Catherine Hardwicke and starring Holly Hunter, Evan Rachel Wood, and Nikki Reed. After being befriended by a disturbed classmate, Tracy, a seventh-grader in Los Angeles, begins to experiment with drugs, sex, and crime.

The film is loosely based on Reed’s experiences from ages 12 to 13. The cast also includes Brady Corbet, Kip Pardue, Deborah Kara Unger, and Vanessa Hudgens (in her feature picture debut).

Over the course of six days, Hardwicke and Reed penned the screenplay for Thirteen, and Hardwicke, a former production designer, obtained the necessary funding on her own. In 2002, the majority of the filming was done on location in Los Angeles using hand-held cameras.

At the Sundance Picture Festival in January 2003, Hardwicke won the Sundance Directing (Drama) Award for the film. Thirteen was released in limited release in the United States on August 20, 2003, by Fox Searchlight Pictures, and went on to gross a total of $4.6 million at the U.S. box office in September 2003.

Thirteen, despite receiving multiple positive reviews from critics, was controversial for its depiction of juvenile drug use (including inhalants, marijuana, LSD, and alcohol), underage sexual conduct, and self-harm.

For her work in the film, Hunter was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and for both Wood and herself for Best Actress in a Drama.

How Does Thirteen Come to A Close?

thirteen movie ending explained

The final scene, in which Tracy weeps and Melanie kisses her wounds, was so upsetting to Evan Rachel Wood that she went into a coma and awoke fifteen minutes later, being rocked and cuddled by director Catherine Hardwicke.

As we saw in Thirteen, something was seriously wrong with Evie. While we have little problem accepting Evie’s stories of violence and sexual assault when she was younger, we can’t be positive she’s speaking the truth. When Evie moves in with Tracy, she reaches a point where she’s a real problem.

In Thirteen, why did Tracy cut herself? To ease Evie’s burden, Melanie allows her to stay at her house with Tracy while her guardian Brooke is out of town for two weeks. Evie finds Tracy’s habit of cutting herself as a way of dealing with stress while staying at the house.

Do you know if the plot of Thirteen is based on real events? Nikki Reed is the inspiration for Thirteen, a film based on her life experience. Reed became entangled in drug and stealing activities as she sought to fit in at her new school in junior high. Jacki Lyden of NPR joins Catherine Hardwicke, the film’s director and co-writer, and Reed.
