As part of the New York City Anti-Violence Project’s 2002 “Courage Awards,” he co-hosted the event with film critic Frank DeCaro.

At the end of May of that year, Champion had a basal cell carcinoma surgically removed from his skin after he had previously been diagnosed with the condition. During Cancer Awareness Month, he claimed he wanted to spread the word about skin cancer.

Rubem Robierb, Champion’s longtime partner, proposed to him on December 21, 2012, and the two were married on December 21, 2012.

Paducah, Kentucky-based WPSD-TV was Champion’s first employer, followed by Jacksonville-based WJKS (later WCWJ). Eyewitness News at WABC-TV in New York City hired him as a weather forecaster in 1988. In 2004, he was paid $1.5 million a year to appear on Good Morning America.

On April 7, 2008, he made his debut as host of Litton’s Weekend Adventure’s Sea Rescue, an educational and instructive show focusing on rescue, rehabilitation, and in many cases, the return to the wildness of creatures.

He joined The Weather Channel the day after he left GMA to headline his own morning show called America’s Morning Headquarters. AMHQ announced in September 2015 that Champion would join the network’s prime-time lineup as a contributor.

There was a break in the relationship between Champion and The Weather Channel in December 2016. As a result, on December 27, 2016, Champion announced his resignation from the company.

During Ginger Zee’s maternity leave, he returned to ABC as a fill-in weather forecaster on Good Morning America. On May 22, 2019, it was announced that Champion would be returning to WABC-TV’s morning and noon newscasts and contributing to ABC News, beginning June 3, 2019
