DC fans may be looking for more Batman stuff to watch now that The Batman (2022) is making its way around the movie office.
Thankfully, HBO Max offers a dedicated DC media section. There’s enough entertainment to keep any Batman fan busy for the foreseeable future, from the live-action Nolan trilogy to many animated films and TV shows.
The programming on HBO Max covers the full range of tones that a Batman narrative might take. Others love comedic superhero romps starring their favorite caped crusader, while some Batman fans prefer the subject matter to be treated seriously.
Here are the top Batman TV series and movies now available on HBO Max.
1. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight Pits the Dark Knight Against Jack the Ripper (2018)
On paper, removing Batman from the present day and placing him in the Victorian era may appear to be a ridiculous concept.
Gotham by Gaslight, on the other hand, succeeds by pitting the world’s best detective against a real-life mythological serial killer, Jack the Ripper. It takes the outlandish premise seriously and is a gripping mystery from start to finish.
The solo film Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was released in digital format late last month. However, for those who like actual copies of our flicks, it finally arrives today, February 6th.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is based in part on the same-named comic book one-shot and depicts a vastly different Batman than the one most people are familiar with.
The film, like the comic, imagines what Batman and his supporting cast might be like if they lived in the Victorian era. Many beloved characters from the Batman franchise appear in dramatically different versions of themselves, while still retaining many of the attributes that define them.
Don’t assume that just because you’ve read the comic, you’ve seen all of the twists and turns. There are some fantastic twists and turns, as well as an ending that is unlike any other you’ve read before.
2. Batman: Year One Is an Origin Story for Both Batman and Jim Gordon
Batman: Year One is based on the classic Frank Miller comic and serves as an origin narrative for both Jim Gordon and Batman.
They adjust to the corrupt city of Gotham in different ways: Gordon tries to remove unscrupulous cops from the force through legal methods, but Wayne chooses to take justice into his own hands by adopting a secret identity.
Year One does an excellent job of demonstrating how these two polar opposites eventually became partners. Bryan Cranston’s imposing performance as Jim Gordon also adds gravity to the film.
Frank Miller wrote and David Mazzucchelli drew Batman: Year One, an American comic book narrative arc. Year One was first published in 1987 in Batman #404–407 by DC Comics.
The story has been reprinted several times, including a hardback, multiple trade paperbacks, various deluxe editions in hardcover and paperback, and an absolute edition. In 2011, Year One was converted into an animated film.
The plot follows Batman’s first year as a crime fighter while also delving into the lives of freshly relocated Gotham police officer James Gordon, leading up to their initial encounter and eventual cooperation against the criminal underbelly of Gotham.
3. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Is a Classic Mystery With a Clever Twist
Some of the more extravagant Batman films emphasize Batman’s heroic side while ignoring his investigative roots.
When another masked vigilante begins murdering various crime lords in Gotham, Bruce Wayne’s detective talents are put to the test in Mask of the Phantasm.
It’s a true whodunit, complete with many red herrings that leave tiny hints for discerning viewers to piece together the puzzle before the twist.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (also known as Batman: The Animated Movie: Mask of the Phantasm) is a 1993 American animated superhero film written by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, and Martin Pasko, and Michael Reaves and directed by Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm.
It features the Batman character from DC Comics.
The film is based on Batman: The Animated Series and is Warner Bros. Animation’s first original theatrical film, the first in the DC Animated Universe, and the only one distributed in theatres.
Dana Delany, Hart Bochner, Stacy Keach Jr., Abe Vigoda, Dick Miller, and John P. Ryan join Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., and Bob Hastings, and Robert Costanzo in reprising their roles from The Animated Series.

The terrible story of Batman’s second Robin, Jason Todd, being assassinated by The Joker is told in Batman: Under the Red Hood. It’s harsh and terrible in equal measure, and it explores themes of regret, loss, abandonment, and atonement.
Under the Red Hood is the pinnacle of Batman animated flicks, boasting stunning animation, thrilling action sequences, and insightful dialogue. Also, selecting Jensen Ackles as the film’s angsty antagonist was a little stroke of genius.

5. The Dark Knight Trilogy Explores How Batman Could Exist in the Real World
The Dark Knight trilogy is regarded as the greatest superhero trilogy ever made for a reason. Each of the films’ villains, Ra’s al Ghul/Scarecrow, Joker, and Bane, were expertly focused on relatable themes.
Batman Begins deals with fear, The Dark Knight examines chaos, and The Dark Knight Rises deals with pain — and each of these themes was embodied in the films’ villains: Ra’s al Ghul/Scarecrow, Joker, and Bane, respectively.
