Why A Georgia-based Entertainment Business Has Sued Tyler?

Tyler Perry Allegations

A Georgia-based entertainment business has sued Tyler Perry for allegedly negotiating improperly with government authorities while attempting to convert a former military base into a movie studio.

In a federal complaint filed earlier this week, the entertainment mogul was accused of aiming to “thwart the financial opportunity” of Ubiquitous Entertainment Studios. The case also names the US Department of Defense as a defendant.

“Intentional or negligent misrepresentation and fraud” is one of the causes of action specified against the defendants.

According to the complaint, a UES representative met with a government official in 2011 and proposed turning Fort McPherson into a studio and entertainment complex, but Perry intervened and persuaded them to agree to his deal to provide a similar “studio, sound stage, animation, school, and education complexes” in the same 80-acre space.

It appears that the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority (MILRA) accepted UES’s proposal, which was confidential, and presented it to Perry with “site plans, construction plans, drawings, and UES’s business strategy.”

The case claims that the defendants violated the United States Constitution’s Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses, and UES is seeking compensatory damages from a jury.

TheWrap has reached out to Tyler Perry Studios for comment, but Perry’s personal agents have yet to react.

The West Region of the Writers Guild of America

The Writers Guild of America, West filed unfair labor practice allegations with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in October 2008, alleging that Perry’s production firm, Tyler Perry Studios, unlawfully fired four writers in retribution for their attempts to negotiate a union contract.

Tyler Perry Studios decided to become a WGA signatory a month later, and the dispute was resolved.

Perry threatened legal action against Mo’ Money Taxes, a tax preparation firm based in Memphis, Tennessee, in early 2009 after the company aired a television commercial that he felt aggressively imitated his work, particularly Madea Goes to Jail.

The ad depicts “Ma’Madea,” a huge white male (John Cowan) in drag. The offensive advertisement was taken out of circulation.

In court, a former Tyler Perry Studios employee claims that his supervisor sexually assaulted him and that he was unlawfully fired.

On May 13, Joshua Sole, a former production assistant, filed a $5 million complaint in Atlanta Federal Court against Tyler Perry, Tyler Perry Studios, and Brett Hendrix. Perry is also accused of libel in the complaint.

Tyler Perry Studios, in southwest Atlanta, is the home of the entertainment mogul’s television shows “For Better or Worse” and “Love Thy Neighbor.”

Sole claims Hendrix, his boss, “subjected him to verbal and physical sexual harassment” in the 17-page lawsuit.
