Mayor of Tallahassee, Florida, Andrew Gillum (born July 26, 1979) is a former politician who was elected to office in 2016. At the tender age of 23, he was elected to the Tallahassee City Commission, serving from 2003 to 2014. His political affiliation is with the Democratic Party.

Gillum was the Democratic Party’s choice for governor of Florida in 2018. In the Democratic primary, he beat off Gwen Graham, a former congresswoman, and Philip Levine, a former mayor of Miami Beach. Ron DeSantis, a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Florida, defeated him in the general election.

Twenty-one felonies were lodged against Gillum in 2022 for allegedly diverting campaign funds to a corporation owned by one of his closest advisors, including wire fraud, conspiracy, and false statements.

As a Child and A Student

Andrew Gillum grew up in Gainesville, Florida, where he now resides as the mayor of the city of Miami. Charles and Frances Gillum, both construction workers and school bus drivers, had him as the sixth of seven children.

In 1998, Gillum graduated from Gainesville High School and was named one of the city’s “persons of the year” by the Gainsville Sun. As a result, he made the move to Tallahassee, Florida, to study political science at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU).

Gillum was the first student to serve on the FAMU Board of Trustees and was president of the FAMU Student Government Association from 2001 to 2002. He was named a “rising leader for 2003” by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

In addition, Gillum served as a board member of the National Coalition of Black Civic Participation’s Black Youth Vote Coalition. In fact, Gillum was elected to the Tallahassee City Commission before he had even finished high school.

When Rashada Jai Howard, a fellow FAMU alum, proposed to Gillum in May 2009, he accepted. It is a family of three.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Gillum was one among three men found with “plastic baggies of suspected crystal meth” in a hotel room in Miami Beach in March 2020; however, no arrests were made.

Numerous media sites have identified the person who died from an overdose as a gay male escort. Gillum initially refused to talk to authorities because he was too drunk. Gillum’s fans took to social media to congratulate him on his decision.

This is Gillum’s first sit-down interview since he was found drunk in a Miami Beach hotel room in March with a guy who had overdosed, on Hall’s new syndicated talk show. Leaked images showed Gillum lying still on the ground.

He spoke about the incident that scuttled his once-promising political career, even though he was not charged. After losing the 2018 governor’s race by less than 35,000 votes to Republican Ron DeSantis, he opened out about his difficulties with mental health and alcohol misuse (less than half a percentage point).

During a meeting with Hall, Gillum said that he had no idea who the individual on the floor was. “To put it another way, that was just a human being at their most exposed. I was lying in my own vomit, unconscious, and no one had my permission to utilise that moment.

Following the incident, he claimed to have sought treatment for alcoholism and depression at a rehabilitation facility. Therapy and his wife were essential in his recovery.

In his own words, he remarked, “I’m still here by the grace of God.” “Trying to get over shame has occupied a significant portion of my rehabilitation process.”
