“Westworld” Season 4 Episode 3: Ramin Djawadi on Metallica and Billie Eilish Covers!

Westworld: Ramin Djawadi

Metal and Billie Eilish covers for Season 4 Episode 3 of Westworld by Ramin Djawadi appeared first on Consequence of Sound.

There are spoilers for “Années Folles,” the third episode of season four of Westworld. To learn more about Episode 2’s soundtrack, click here.

The latest episode of Westworld features Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) and Caleb (Aaron Paul) exploring the secrets of the new Delos park they’ve stumbled upon, and the show adds two notable new cover songs to its catalog, including a full orchestra cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” Ramin Djawadi, the show’s composer, joins us to discuss all of this and more.

Midway through “Années Folles,” “Enter Sandman” begins, and it’s a familiar action sequence: To rob the Butterfly Club (a stand-in for Sweetwater’s Mariposa Saloon), a new Hector (Nico Galàn) appears in “Temperance,” the show’s final credits indicating this particular Delos park is called that.

Delos writers are clearly repeating existing material for the plotlines of this park, but Djawadi claims that he and his crew deliberately chose not to recycle “Paint It, Black” for the segment in question. (The Rolling Stones cover was previously used for the Mariposa Saloon robbery in Season 1 and a similar robbery in ShogunWorld in Season 2). “Here, we just thought, let’s be Westworld, let’s change it up. Iconic song: “Let’s go with another one.”

This particular cover was especially exciting for Djawadi since, as it turns out, the artist used to be a major Metallica fan. Despite a tinge of jazz, the music is more rock and roll than jazzy because it’s an action sequence. I still have a little jazz influence in there, but most of the song is rock and roll.

During the opening sequence of “Années Folles,” Bernard travels to the Sublime (the Valley Beyond, or “Robot Heaven”), where he learns from Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon) that pandemonium would ensue unless Bernard intervenes.
