Where Can I Get the First Season of Home and Away?

You can view the drama series Home and Away, starring Helena Bozich, Ray Meagher, and Adam Willits. Utilize your Roku device to watch it on Freeview.

Neighbours were taken up by rival Network 10 and made into a hit when the Seven Network cancelled it owing to low ratings on July 12, 1985. Two years later, Alan Bateman, the head of drama at Seven, grew keen to get back into the soap business and started planning how to introduce a different soap that wasn’t a knockoff of Neighbours.

Bateman started conversing with people who were “up in arms” over the establishment of a foster home for children from the city while visiting Kangaroo Point, New South Wales, with his family. Bateman left with the concept for a new serial after observing the level of turmoil the “influx of parentless youngsters on a tight-knit community” was causing.

“Nobody in the neighbourhood wanted them to move in, and I started to wonder how savvy city kids would adjust to the new way of life,” he explains.

Place And Sets

Since the first season of Home and Away aired in 1988, Palm Beach in Sydney’s Northern Beaches neighbourhood has served as a stand-in for Summer Bay. In the fictitious beachside community of Summer Bay, New South Wales, Home and Away is situated.

The beach, a high school, a diner, a bait store, a garage, and a surf club with a gym, a small shop, and an upper restaurant are all within the town. Characters in the programme reside in the Summer Bay House, Summer Bay Caravan Park, Beach House, The Farmhouse, Pier Flat, and Saxon Avenue, among other nearby neighbourhoods.

Mangrove River and Yabbie Creek are two more made-up communities mentioned in and occasionally seen in Home and Away.

Characters And The Cast

In-Home and Away, Ray Meagher (Alf Stewart) is the only surviving original cast member. The “Fletcher” family, who moved from the city to live in the seaside town of Summer Bay, was the primary focus of Home and Away when it first debuted in January 1988.

Tom (Roger Oakley) and his wife Pippa (Vanessa Downing) and their five foster children, Frank Morgan (Alex Papps), Carly Morris (Sharyn Hodgson), Steven Matheson (Adam Willits), Lynn Davenport (Helena Bozich), Bobby Simpson becomes Tom and Pippa’s sixth foster kid at the end of the first episode (Nicolle Dickson).

After purchasing Summer Bay Caravan Park, the Fletchers relocated into Summer Bay House. They quickly formed close bonds with the locals, including Ray Meagher’s Alf Stewart, Judy Nunn’s Ailsa Hogan, Frank Lloyd’s Neville, Sheila Kennelly’s Floss McPhee, Greg Benson’s surfer Matt Wilson, Peter Vroom and Craig Thomson’s local yobs Lance Smart and Martin Dibble, and Donald Fisher’s school principal Donald Fisher (Norman Coburn).

Within the first month, Alf Stewart’s sister Celia Stewart (Fiona Spence), who played a role much to the busybody Gwen Plumb performed in the pilot, joined them. Roo Stewart, Alf Stewart’s disobedient daughter, joined them in the third episode.

While the ensemble of Home and Away includes both younger and older, more seasoned performers, the programme has always clearly had a youth focus, with the younger characters controlling the majority of the stories.

In particular, founding cast member Judy Nunn, who departed the show in 2000 after 12 years of service as the co-owner of Summer Bay’s café, has spent a significant amount of time on Home and Away. Norman Coburn, who portrayed high school administrator Donald Fisher until 2003, and Kate Ritchie, who played Sally Fletcher for 20 years, were both initial cast members.

Ritchie left the role in 2008. Along with Ray Meagher (Alf Stewart), Coburn and Ritchie were listed in the 2002 Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running actors in an Australian drama series. Meagher is the only surviving member of the original cast and he currently maintains that record alone.

Meagher is presently the longest-serving cast member in Home and Away, followed by Lynne McGranger (Irene Roberts), Ada Nicodemou (Leah Patterson-Baker), and Emily Symons (Marilyn Chambers).

The role of Roo Stewart, portrayed by Justine Clarke in the 1988–1989 season of Home and Away, was filled by Georgie Parker in 2010. The only two original characters left in the series are Alf and Roo.

Grading And Limitations

Despite airing in a G-rated time block, Home and Away has dealt with several contentious topics since 1988. Every episode that has aired since 2008 has been classified as PG and frequently goes beyond the rating.

Both 7plus and 7two broadcast the early episodes that were rerun under the PG classification. The programme was initially broadcast in New Zealand on TV3 at 5:30 pm in an edited timeslot with a G rating.

The show now airs uncensored and in PG-13 territory at 6:30 p.m. When the programme aired on ITV in the UK, it underwent extensive editing to remove material that was judged inappropriate for pre-watershed watching.

Since many episodes were shortened to fit the time slot, certain ongoing storylines would not have made sense to viewers in the UK. Some episodes were only 15 minutes long.

Who of the Women on Home and Away Is the Longest?

The longest-running female cast member of an Australian television soap opera is Australian actress Lynne McGranger (born 29 January 1953), who has played Irene Roberts on Home and Away for more than 29 years.
