Born on October 18, 1984, Lindsey Caroline Vonn is a former US Ski Team member and World Cup alpine ski racer. She took home four World Cup overall titles, finishing second only to Annemarie Moser-Pröll among female skiers, with victories in 2008, 2009, and 2010, as well as another in 2012.
At the Winter Olympics in 2010, Vonn became the first American woman to win a gold medal in the downhill competition. She has set a record by winning eight World Cup downhill season titles (2008-2013, 2015, 2016), five super-G titles (2009-2012, 2015), and three straight combined titles (2010-2012).
Lindsey Caroline Kildow was born on October 18, 1984, to Linda Anne and Alan Lee Kildow in St. Paul, Minnesota. By the time she was two years old, her grandfather in Milton, Wisconsin, had taught her how to ski.
She later enrolled in Erich Sailer’s renowned development skiing school at Buck Hill in Burnsville, Minnesota. Picabo Street, an Olympic gold medalist skier, was introduced to Vonn when she was nine.
After seeing Vonn ski for the first time in 1999 at the age of 15, the encounter had such an impact on Street that she eventually became Vonn’s skiing mentor. In order for Vonn to train full-time, the family relocated to Vail, Colorado, in the late 1990s. She studied in an online high school at the University of Missouri.
When Vonn became the first American woman to win the Trofeo Topolino in Italy at the age of 15, it was a significant turning point in her skiing career. At age 16, she debuted in the World Cup after rising through the ranks of the American ski team.
From there, being an Olympic superstar was simply a matter of time. At the age of 17, she competed in the slalom and combined events in Salt Lake City, making her Olympic debut. Vonn won a silver medal at the Junior World Championship in Puy-Saint-Vincent, France, in March 2003.
She made her maiden appearance on the World Cup podium the following year when she placed third in the downhill at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, in January 2004. She won five additional podiums during the following two months.
In 2006, at Vonn’s second Winter Olympics in Italy, she finished second in the first practice run but crashed in the second and had to be airlifted to Turin, where she spent the night in the hospital.
Despite having considerable pain and bruises, Vonn went back to the slopes two days later. She competed, came in eighth, and took home the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award for her courageous effort despite suffering. She placed third in both the downhill and super-G events at the 2007 World Cup.
Only the second American woman, Vonn, won the overall World Cup title in 2008. On March 8 of that year, in Switzerland, she won ten World Cup downhill races, breaking the previous American record of eight. In 2009 and 2010, she repeated her overall World Cup victories.
