gray man release date

The Gray Man is a 2022 American action thriller film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, based on the 2009 Mark Greaney novel of the same name, which the latter co-wrote with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

In addition to Billy Bob Thornton and Alfre Woodard, the movie also stars Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Dhanush, and Jessica Henwick.

The movie, which is being made by the Russo brothers’ AGBO, is meant to launch a series based on Greaney’s Gray Man books. Greaney’s book was once slated for adaptation in 2011, with James Gray due to helm Brad Pitt and subsequently Charlize Theron in a gender-flipped role.

Neither version, however, ever materialized. Until it was revealed that the Russo brothers would direct and that Gosling and Evans would star, the project sat in development hell.

Premise

Court Gentry, nicknamed Sierra Six, is the most competent mercenary employed by the CIA. When he unintentionally discovers some dark agency secrets, he becomes a prime target and is pursued throughout the globe by his psychotic former coworker Lloyd Hansen and other international assassins.

When Will the Gray Man Be Available on Netflix?

Since Friday, July 15, The Gray Man has had a limited theatre run in the United Kingdom. However, it’s believed that a lot of people have been waiting for it to appear on Netflix so they may watch it for free as part of their membership.

What is the Gray Man’s Storyline?

The Gray Man, an elite ex-CIA agent with a reputation as a fearsome assassin for hire, is played by Ryan Gosling as Court Gentry. Gentry, also known as Sierra Six, is dragged out of a federal prison by his handler Donald Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) for a clandestine mission abroad.

Gentry learns that a rescue squad sent to get him out of a difficult situation in exotic Bangkok with Agent Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas) has been given orders to kill him. Now, insane former CIA employee Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) is hunting Sierra Six all over the world and would do everything to bring him to justice.

Will There Be a Sequel to the Gray Man?

The likelihood that we’ll see more of Ryan Gosling’s Sierra Six character is quite high given the massive amount of money invested in this film (the biggest in Netflix history), barring a complete failure. The Russo Brothers have publicly stated their intention to develop a successful franchise by extending the world of The Gray Man. And there is still plenty of material to mine—there are 10 sequels in the whole Greaney novel series, with a new one due out in 2023.

Reviews of The Gray Man

The Gray Man has gotten a mixed bag of reviews thus far. With a 52 percent Tomatometer score, Rotten Tomatoes(opens in new tab) concluded that it had “the star-studded outline of an enjoyable action thriller, but it’s filled in with tepid leftovers from far better films.”

A “colorful 007 rip-off,” according to Brian Viner of The Daily Mail, who gave it 4 out of 5 stars. He adds that it is “happy shows, with some stunts that are as thrillingly spectacular as they are implausibly ridiculous.” The Bond movie producers may need to step up their game.

This Netflix story of CIA assassins, which flits rapidly between exotic locales, has lots of excitement but little heart, according to Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian(opens in new tab), who gives it two stars.

Development

Adam Cozad’s script and James Gray’s appointment as director were originally lined up at New Regency in January 2011. Initially set to appear, Brad Pitt and Gray were dropped from the project by October 2015. The Russo brothers wrote the screenplay for the gender-flipped version of the movie, and Charlize Theron has begun negotiations to appear in it for Sony Pictures.

Could Gray Man 2 Be in the Works?

Although a sequel to The Gray Man has not been officially announced, there are a lot of suspicions that there will be one given that the film is based on a 10-book series. The Russo Brothers, a directing team, have also made public comments about their desire for a sequel.

Joe Russo stated that “we’re not going to answer every topic in the first movie” during 2020’s virtual Comic Con event. Definitely indicating that there will be more.

The actor said, “This is being planned as a series of films, and again, maybe spreading out, we could follow different people, but we’re not going to address every question in the movie. The movie will end with a satisfying conclusion, but there will still be unanswered issues regarding the cosmos as a whole.
