Texas Rent Relief Application Status: Get More Information About It!

texas rent relief application status

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Texas is closing the door on a massive program to help struggling families pay their rent and keep their lights on, according to one lawmaker.

The Texas Rent Relief Program will no longer accept new applications after Friday at 5 p.m., due to an overflow of requests for the federally funded program.

In a letter to lawmakers this week, the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs said there isn’t enough money in the bank to help everyone who has applied for assistance.

Since December, the U.S. Treasury Department says Texas has received more than $1.7 billion in federal aid to help low-income residents pay their rent and utility bills.

TDHCA, on the other hand, claims that the rent relief program’s total funding stands at more than $1.9 billion—and it’s requesting additional funds from Treasury, which would allow the agency to reopen applications.

Rent subsidies for 209,000 households in Texas have cost nearly $1.2 billion so far, and the state has committed another $108 million for an additional 19,000. The Texas Department of Health and Human Services (TDHCA) has $680 million available for applications submitted before Friday’s deadline.

The agency wrote to the state House Urban Affairs Committee on Tuesday, “This action will be to ensure that all of those applications that have been fully submitted will be reviewed and funded if they meet criteria.”

State Representative Philip Cortez, a San Antonio Democrat and the committee’s chairman, was taken aback by that. During a meeting with Cortez last week, Bobby Wilkinson, head of the agency, said that he expected the funds to help needy families would not run out until March.
