Is He Gay?

Before coming out to the public as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in June, David Archuleta had a spiritual crisis.

The former American Idol contestant admitted to the Today show that she felt “so disconnected from everything” during a recent interview. ‘My anxiety was at an all-time high.’

According to the singer of the hit single “Crush,” he was honest with himself and his family about his attraction to men for years before coming to terms with it during a Mormon Church proselytizing mission to Chile in 2012.

It wasn’t until he had recently broken up with an ex-girlfriend earlier this year that his relationship with God had a major shift.

In an interview with Today, Archuleta recalled thinking, “I don’t even remember how it feels to be close to God or to even have feelings for anyone.” or “I have no idea how I feel about myself at the moment.”

When he prayed, he wasn’t asking God to change his desires, which he’d come to accept by that point. Instead, he was hoping for divine intervention.

David, you know I have complete faith in you, don’t you?’ “And it was just so clear what I needed to say,” the singer recalled of being told to post about her current struggles.

The 30-year-old actor’s recent Instagram post, in which he revealed that he had come out as gay to his family in 2014 but was still pondering whether or not he was bisexual or asexual, was inspired by this particular prayer.

It’s important for people of faith to open their hearts to the LGBTQ+ community, he wrote in a caption accompanying the photo.

Those who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are part of that community and are trying to find that balance with their faith, which is also a huge part of their identity like myself, I just ask you to please consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate,” he wrote in June.

As a former Brigham Young University student who came out as gay in 2019 and penned the book Without the Mask: Coming Out and Coming Into God’s Light, Charlie Bird believes that Archuleta’s coming out has had a lasting cultural impact.

“It’s fostering empathy and bridging gaps of understanding when a courageous, beloved, public member of our religious community comes out as LGBTQIA+,” Bird told Today.

“When David came out publicly, he challenged that narrative for many people and helped them realize ways in which they can offer love and support. There are a lot of people having conversations they’ve never had before,” he said.

For those who are LGBTQ+ and religious, Archuleta wants them to know that they aren’t alone and that it’s okay if they don’t have all the answers right away.

Today, he said, “I just want them to know they’re not alone.” People who are in the same situation as me have sent me a lot of personal messages.

Religious LGBTQ+ people should hear from him that it is possible to embrace both their faith and their queer identity, he argues in his response.

It’s possible to accommodate both, even if it’s unclear how — Archuleta admits she’s still trying to figure it out.
