The GLBT community knows a lot about Gilles Marini. He’s appeared on shows like Sex and the City and Devious Maids, which are popular with gay and lesbian audiences. When it comes to his charitable work, Marini is more than just the star of an iconic shower scene.
Marini is no stranger to the long, arduous journey that is a Kiehl’s LifeRide for amfAR event.
A significant company in the fight against AIDS is Kiehl’s, according to Marini. It was a no-brainer for me to participate because of where I grew up and the impact it has had on my life. It’s too good to pass up. Every year, I make time for it in my schedule.
Since its inception in 2011, Kiehl’s LifeRide for amfAR has taken place every year from Denver to San Diego. Marini once again joined Kiehl’s to raise money for amfAR’s HIV/AIDS cure research by riding across the country on motorcycles from August 3–15.
According to Marini, riding a motorcycle across the country is a lot like surfing. Because it’s so open and you have to be so focused on what’s around you, ” he says, “You really enjoy the scenery much more. It’s a long, arduous ride, but it serves to remind you why you’re doing it in the first place. “It’s easier to connect what we do to the charity if the journey we’re on is difficult.”
Since he was a child, Marini has been aware of his desire to make a difference in the world. He has been riding motorcycles for 25 years now, and he says, “I have to stop.” To paraphrase him, “you get very empty very fast” when you don’t help people, he says.
That’s how my mom was, too.” My mother and father were always willing to give whatever they had, even to the point of exhaustion. The difference between me and the average person is that I have more influence and clout, so I use that to make a difference in the world.
I’d be nothing if for that connection. So when someone does this for me, it makes me feel proud and honored. We’ll all die, and I want to be remembered as someone who wasn’t selfish when I’m no longer here.”
For the entirety of Marini’s career, he has been acutely sensitive to and appreciative of his lesbian and gay fans. After meeting Fred Goudon while working as a model at the age of 18, Marini went on to become a photographer.
This “community” led Marini “every step of the way” to where he is today, he says. This community has been a blessing to me, and for that, I’m grateful. And, as you may recall, the AIDS epidemic devastated our neighborhood, so my work is motivated by that experience. To the people here, I owe so much. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
He goes a step further than most celebrities in showing their admiration by staying connected on social media. It’s hard to tell if the tweets are coming from an assistant or from the person themselves in an era where it’s impossible to tell. When it comes to his finances, Marini has complete control.
His Twitter and Instagram accounts will only ever be used by him from now on, he says. “I always respond to myself and never allow anyone else to do so. ” Wish I had more time or a better understanding of how it operates.
It has a deeper meaning to me. While on a trip such as [Kiehl’s LifeRide], I try to take photos and share them with the rest of the world in order to show people how beautiful our country really is. I’m in the middle of a national park right now. This mountain range appears to have appeared out of nowhere.
Fans can expect to see more of Marini after the motorcycle ride. His current projects have wrapped up, but he’s keeping an eye out for a new opportunity.
When he returns from his trip, “I’ll need to work on getting something new,” he tells the others in his group. This is what I do, and it’s always a challenge and a little scary. Something that will shock people is what I’m looking for.
Fans can rest assured that the shock value will not disappoint. He tells Lavender that the rest of the season of Devious Maids will air in the fall and that viewers can expect a special treat.
