One of the new “Mystery Box” features introduced by Netflix on Thursday is designed to help kids discover new movies and TV shows. On the company’s connected TV platforms, the new feature, which is similar to a shuffle button, is being rolled out today. Netflix understands that it can be difficult to persuade children to try new things, which is why it is launching this new feature.
A “Favorites Row” is featured at the top of the Netflix homepage when logged into a Netflix Kids account, where the new feature can be accessed by children and their caregivers. You must then hover over the “Mystery Box” to discover a new title. A preview of a TV show or movie will begin playing as soon as you hover over the box with a question mark.
In a blog post, Netflix’s director of product innovation for kids and families, TJ Marston, said, “Kids are drawn to what they love — their favorite toys, foods, songs — and it’s hard to get them to try something new.” Kids should enjoy the element of surprise and delight that comes with learning about the next show or movie that has been recommended just for them.
This new Netflix feature is aimed at providing kids with a more enjoyable and engaging way to find new content to watch. The company claims that the new feature will help children discover new series and movies, or even reunite them with a familiar character.
Many new features have been introduced for children in the last year by the company. Netflix began sending out kids’ recap emails in July of last year in an effort to better inform parents about their children’s viewing habits.
The emails provide parents with access to coloring sheets and activities based on their child’s favorite characters. In addition, they provide suggestions based on a child’s preferred television shows and films. A new “Kids Top 10” row on Netflix features the most popular kids’ shows in your country.
Last year, Netflix also redesigned its Kids profile to make it more user-friendly. Kids’ profiles had a similar layout to an adult’s before the update; rows displayed Trending shows and other recommendations.
The most popular content is now displayed at the top of the row. Netflix’s decision to re-design its user interface was logical, given that younger children are more likely to use Netflix visually.
