On January 17, 1962, Jim Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. His mother was a housewife and his father was a certified public accountant. At the age of eight, he began imitating faces in front of a mirror and discovered a talent for it.
When Jim was 12 years old, his father suddenly lost his job and the family became homeless. They lived in a van and worked overnight as janitors and security guards at a nearby factory. Teenage Jim would frequently work an eight-hour shift at the factory after a full day of school. After dropping out of school in 1978 to help support his family, he worked as a factory janitor for two years.
Jim, who was always a natural comedian and impersonator (as was his father), began performing stand-up in Toronto comedy clubs at the age of 15. In his youth, his father would transport him to clubs. At the age of 19, Carrey relocated to Hollywood, where he acted in films and on television.
As an opening act for comics such as Buddy Hackett and Rodney Dangerfield, he wrote the majority of his own material. He was known for his high energy level and frenetic improvisation, and he had a primarily visual comic appeal. He was a technically brilliant impersonator with over 100 characterizations ranging from Humphrey Bogart to Kermit the Frog.
