A new sticker will soon be plastered on all kinds of displays, but this one might actually help identify a good one, suggest experts.

The Clear Motion Ratio (ClearMR) standard, recently introduced by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), will make it simpler to evaluate a screen’s ability to reduce motion blur. Display panels, computer monitors, laptops, tablets, TVs, and other emissive and LCD display items are all covered by the new criteria.

“ClearMR is valuable to the typical user since it is a standardized measure of how sharp moving images are on a display, which all the other numbers on the box are not,” Ben Golus, tech artist and graphics programmer, told Lifewire over Twitter.

It’s All a Blur

In the time it takes for a pixel to transition from one color to the next, moving objects can appear to blur or streak due to motion blur. Monitors that can maintain this pixel switching duration to a minimum are touted for their greater sharpness of moving objects and less overall blur.

According to experts, however, these specs no longer accurately represent a display’s capacity to eliminate blur on the screen and have lost much of their relevance over time. According to the VESA’s press release, current displays are loaded with a variety of technologies that artificially increase pixel reaction time.

Golus chooses GtG (Grey to Grey), a popular benchmark, as an example to describe a method certain monitor vendors have done in the past. The time it takes for a pixel to transition between different shades of gray is what GtG is meant to quantify.

However, since there’s no industry standard that oversees the measurement, some companies report low results by monitoring the time to change, but without agreeing on that value.

It may “move from gray to a somewhat brighter gray in 1ms,” Golus added, “then shoot past all the way to white,” before gradually returning to the initial target gray value over the next 100 ms. It’s possible that the image quality could degrade due to the distortions that this behavior could cause.

In its news statement, VESA concedes that time-based metrics for categorizing blur can no longer be trusted to accurately depict the underlying nature of blur.

According to Dale Stolitzka, senior principal researcher at Samsung Display’s America R&D Lab and lead contributor to ClearMR, “with ClearMR, VESA is providing the electronics industry with an open standard that gives consumers the confidence in knowing that they are purchasing a TV, notebook, or monitor that meets the most well-defined set of blur criteria.”

Clear Vision

According to VESA, the new ClearMR definition assigns a number based on the ratio of clear to fuzzy pixels. ClearMR 3000, for instance, may achieve a range of 2,500–3,500, which indicates that for every blurry pixel, 25–35 clear ones are produced.

ClearMR testing ensures more uniformity amongst displays by restricting the usage of motion blur enhancement techniques used by different manufacturers.

Seven distinct levels make up the ClearMR specification. ClearMR 3000 is the entry-level, hence the CMR of the tested display falls between 2,500 and 3,500. ClearMR 9000 is the highest rating and is given to displays with a CMR of 8,500 or higher.

According to VESA, there is a perceptible difference in clarity between each tier, hence a higher number indicates less blur. All displays are subjected to extensive testing and acquire the ClearMR rating only after passing through all tests.

Although VESA has just announced the standard, ClearMR has already started to find its way into the market. ClearMR certification is already included in a number of screens from manufacturers including LG.

“We feel that with VESA launching its ClearMR standard in the rapidly increasing gaming market, we can expect to see even greater innovation in the gaming monitor categories,” stated Seok-ho Jang, vice president and head of the IT development division at LG Electronics, in ClearMR’s PR.
