Although the release of the iPhone 14 is less than a week away, it is never too early to speculate on Apple’s future handsets, especially when they are likely to gain as huge a performance boost as some are now anticipating for 2023’s iPhone 15 Pro.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are getting the most of this year’s iPhone lineup’s advancements, but the next phone could be a formidable contender in its own right. Apple’s cellular silicon is built by TSMC, a Taiwanese company, and they’ve said that the next technology, 3-nanometer chips, will soon be transferred into mass production.

That might suggest that the iPhone in 2023 will use a 3nm chipset, which will presumably be called the A17 Bionic if Apple continues with its current naming convention.

Digitimes (opens in new tab) claims the N3E, a more powerful variant of this technology, won’t be released until the iPhone 15 Pro’s official release in the fall of 2023.

According to Digitimes, TSMC CEO CC Wei said, “N3E will further extend our N3 family with increased performance, power, and yield.” As stated at N3E, “we witnessed a great level of customer interaction, and volume production is scheduled about one year following N3.”

The A15 Bionic is the system-on-chip that powers the current iPhone 13 series, and it is widely believed that both the standard iPhone 14 and the upcoming iPhone 14 Max will employ the same chip.

It has been speculated that the A16 Bionic, which is expected to power the iPhone 14 Pro models, would be manufactured using the same 5nm process as the A15, making this the third year in a row that Apple’s mobile devices will be powered by 5nm CPUs.

With the help of a lower nanoscale process, chip manufacturers can fit more transistors onto silicon, leading to a significant performance boost and increased energy consumption.

That being the case, the jump from the 5nm chipset in the iPhone 14 Pro to the 3nm unit in the phone released the following year should be substantial.

According to Gizchina (opens in new tab), which cites industry sources, Apple is “the principal buyer of TSMC’s 3nm course of manufacture in 2023” based on the company’s N3E production schedule. That means a 3nm chip probably won’t make its way into Android phones until 2024 at the earliest.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which might be found in Samsung’s Galaxy S23 phones, is an Android-friendly 4nm CPU. As of this writing, we expect the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to bring 3nm only in 2024.

However, it’s worth mentioning that Samsung has a shot at beating Apple to the punch. According to 9to5Google (link opens in new tab), Samsung’s chip business has recently begun production of 3nm chips, which significantly reduces energy consumption.

With Samsung phones, like the Galaxy S23 expected to come next year, likely using Snapdragon exclusively, we should see which phones launch with a 3nm chipset in 2020.

The iPhone 14 Pro will include a 48MP camera and a redesign that does away with the notch in the display regardless of the processor it uses. Not much is known about the iPhone 15 lineup at this time, but early reports point to a periscope lens that might lead to an improved telephoto camera.

But if you need a new phone, you probably won’t want to hold out until 2023 for the iPhone 15 Pro to debut, regardless of how powerful its silicon might be.
