Gay Men’s Chorus at Indie Spirits Confirms What We Knew All Along: Laura Dern Is a Gay Icon

On Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica, the Film Independent Spirit Awards got a boost when the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles took the stage inside the tent to pay tribute to the gayest moments in the film in 2019.

That led to a tribute to Laura Dern, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film “Marriage Story” and is a screen legend in her own right.

It’s safe to say that “Laura Dern dressed slutty in court” and “Laura Dern ordering a kale salad” are two of 2019’s gayest movie moments, with the former referring to her lurid performance as hotshot lawyer Nora Fanshaw in “Marriage Story” and the latter to her healthy diet. See the clip down below.

After a relatively quiet afternoon, the Indie Spirits gave a performance that will undoubtedly go down as one of the best in the history of the awards show. The show was introduced by deadpan host Aubrey Plaza, who used her opening monologue to criticize the Academy for failing to do enough to promote diversity in the industry.

She deliberately tried to upset everyone. “Guys, Jennifer Lopez has arrived. Last weekend, she performed at the Super Bowl. Mary Kay Place, what have you done? Because you’re a slob, you’ve accomplished zilch. She laughed and said, “No, really, you are a national treasure.”

In addition to a song extolling Laura Dern’s virtues, the Spirits show featured stills from some of the actress’s most recognizable films, such as “Wild at Heart” and “Blue Velvet.”

Ultimately, “Marriage Story” won the Robert Altman Prize. Previous awards for “Marriage Story” that Dern has won include the Golden Globe, the EE BAFTA, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, all of which she is sure to add to her collection after Sunday night.

After decades of playing cult characters in David Lynch’s films, Laura Dern has experienced something of a renaissance since her 2017 role as Renata Klein on HBO’s iconic drama series “Big Little Lies,” for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
