How to Find a Windows 11 Product Key

Windows product keys, which are used to activate fresh installations of Microsoft’s OS, are an afterthought unless you absolutely need one. This 25-character alphanumeric code is required if you perform a clean installation of Windows 11 or 10 on an existing PC or need to transfer the license to a new computer.

We’ve mentioned before that reusing a Windows product key from an older device or this one will get you Windows 10 or 11 for free (note that “OEM” keys may not let you reuse them on different hardware).

However, you probably won’t be able to use the code unless you have a physical copy of the operating system that you purchased. To your relief, there are a number of simple methods for locating your Windows 10 or 11 product key.

Method 1: Use Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder to Find Windows 10/11 Product Keys

One of the best and simplest ways is to use a free program called Magical JellyBean KeyFinder to locate the product key for Windows 10 or 11.

There is a premium version available from the same company that will retrieve product keys from your computer for programs like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop Elements.

You can get the bare-bones version that merely steals your Windows product key for nothing. How to use it is explained below.

1. Download Magical JellyBean KeyFinder, the free version.

2. Extract keyfinder.exe from the zip file to a folder on your PC. You can skip the other files in the zip archive.

3. Launch keyfinder.exe.

4. Click Yes if prompted by user account control.

You will see a list of information about your current installation of Windows.

5. Copy the code after “CD Key.” That’s your Windows 10 or 11 product key. It’s not the number after “Product ID.”

There you’ll also see the notation that your version of Magical Jelly Bean was “Installed from ‘Full Packaged Product’ media” or “Installed from ‘OEM’ media.” If your Windows installation key is labeled as originating from OEM media, you may have trouble using it on a separate computer.

Method 2: Use the Command Prompt to Find Windows 10/11 Product Keys

The product key for Windows 10 or 11 can be located by running a specific command at the command prompt. While the Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder was successful in locating the key for the identical PC in my testing, the aforementioned approach consistently returned a blank key.

To retrieve the Windows product key using the command line:

1. Launch the command prompt. The easiest way to get there is to hit Windows + R to open the run dialog box, then type in cmd and hit Enter.

2. Paste or type in the following command and hit Enter.

You should see the key on the screen below the line that says “OA3XOriginalProductKey.” If not, this method didn’t work but you can try another one.

Method 3: Use the Registry to Find Windows 10/11 Product Keys

The registry is where you may find the product key for Windows 11 or Windows 10. It’s a matter of knowing where to look.

1. Open the registry editor. The easiest way to get there is to hit Windows key + R to open the run dialog box, enter “Regedit” and hit Enter.

2. Click Yes if prompted by User Account Control.

3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform.

4. Open the BackupProductKeyDefault key.
