How to Get the Old Lock Screen Notification View in iOS 16

Apple has revamped the notifications system in iOS 16 to go along with the new Lock Screen widgets. No longer will alerts appear directly below the clock at the top of your Lock Screen. While many iPhone owners are finding fault with the update, you can play about with the settings to see if anything works better for you personally.

iOS 16 Notification Changes

According to Apple, the new bottom-up design for alerts in iOS 16 is supposed to clear up space on your Lock Screen. By repositioning alerts to the foot of the screen, you’ll be able to view more of your background image. With the addition of widgets, depth effect wallpapers, live wallpapers, and more to the Lock Screen in iOS 16, this is more crucial than ever.

In other words, once you update to iOS 16, your iPhone’s notice will begin showing up at the bottom of the Lock Screen without any more action on your part. You may control alerts globally or by app by swiping up to reveal more of them, deleting them with a press, or reading them in more detail.

Apple has included some additional customizing options for notifications in iOS 16. There are a few different notification settings that may be accessed through the Settings app. Each of these alternatives allows you to change how the alerts show at the bottom of your Lock Screen.

Count:

This removes the bulky notification badges from the Lock Screen and replaces them with a simple count of the number of unread alerts. In order to see all of your alerts, swipe up.

Stack:

It “stacks” all the alerts from all the apps together. Therefore, the Lock Screen and the Notification Center each include separate sets of alerts for the various apps you have installed.

List:

This has always been the case with iOS’s notification system. Simply swipe up from the bottom of the Lock Screen to get an expanded list of notifications.

From the MacStories iOS 16 review, I learned that you can temporarily enable “Count” at any moment by minimizing and only seeing the amount of notifications by dragging downwards on notifications that are on your Lock Screen.

The location of the alerts, however, is fixed and cannot be changed. The “classic” notifications layout is removed permanently with iOS 16. This is understandable, given the addition of widgets to the Lock Screen, but first reactions on social media suggest there is need for a “traditional” Lock Screen mode as well.
