Jared Polis is an American politician, businessman, and philanthropist. Since January 2019, he has been the 43rd governor of Colorado. From 2001 to 2007, he was a member of the Colorado State Board of Education.
From 2009 to 2019, he was the U.S. representative for Colorado’s 2nd congressional district, a job he held for five terms. He was the only Democrat in the libertarian-conservative Liberty Caucus.
With an estimated net worth of $122.6 million, he was the third-richest member of the U.S. Congress. In 2018, he beat the Republican candidate Walker Stapleton to become governor of Colorado. In 2022, he was re-elected with a lot of votes.
Early Years and Education
Jared Schutz Polis was born in Boulder, Colorado, United States, on May 12, 1975. Polis is the son of Stephen Schutz and Susan Polis Schutz, who started Blue Mountain Arts, a company that makes greeting cards and books. In 1975, he was born in Boulder, Colorado, at the Boulder Community Hospital.
As a high school student, he lived in San Diego, California. He went to La Jolla Country Day School and graduated in three years with many awards. In 1996, he got a B.A. in politics from Princeton University, where Carol M. Swain helped him write a 157-page senior thesis called “Paradigm Shift: Politics in the Information Age.”
During his time at Princeton, Polis was in charge of communications for the undergraduate student government. He was also involved in other groups on campus, like Model Congress and the Princeton Juggling Club. In 2000, he legally changed his last name to that of his mother because he “liked it better” and wanted to bring attention to a charity event.
Is Jared Polis Gay?
Yes, Jared Polis is Gay and His Sexual Orientation is Homosexual. As a man who is openly gay, Polis has made history more than once by winning elections. In 2008, he was elected to the US Congress as the first openly gay parent.
In 2018, he was elected governor of a U.S. state, making him the first openly gay man and the second openly LGBT person to do so (after Kate Brown). He is also the first Jewish person to be elected governor of Colorado. In 2021, he was the first U.S. governor to be married to someone of the same gender.
In September 2021, Polis married his longtime partner Marlon Reis in a small Jewish ceremony with family and a few friends at a Boulder synagogue. Polis and his husband, Marlon Reis, have a son, who was born in 2011, and a daughter, who was born in 2014.

How Did Jared Polis and Marlon Reis Got Married?
In Colorado, it was against the law to marry someone of the same gender until 2014. First, the ban was written into the state’s laws. Then, voters went even further and wrote it into the state’s constitution.
That changed when federal courts started overturning laws against gay marriage. The 10th Circuit Court was the first to do so, and a year later, the U.S. Supreme Court made a decision that changed the world.
Reis said this week, “When I was growing up, marriage wasn’t even a thought.” “There was a lot of false information about what could happen if you came out, like what chances you’d lose. What bad things it would do to you. So, we didn’t talk much about getting married for a long time.”
Both men are in their forties now. Gov. Polis thinks back to how people thought of him when he was younger because he was gay.
“People thought of AIDS when they thought of gay people, which is sad,” he said. “I think that was our parents’ first worry for both of us. “Oh, I hope you don’t get AIDS,” they said. Be careful.'”
The direction and speed of the fight for LGBTQ equality have changed a lot in the last ten years. Polis said that he remembered being on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015 when gay marriage became legal all over the country. When the decision came down, there was an explosion of joy and singing.
“It was just a moment of pure happiness when the system worked,” said one person.
The couple said that when they told their young children that gay people couldn’t get married in the past, they were surprised. Reis said that he is happy that there are now more accurate portrayals of what it means to be gay and more freedom to express oneself.
“Groups of people who have been historically disenfranchised or looked down upon need to be able to look out into the world and see people like themselves doing things they may have thought they could never do,” Reis said.

The Wedding Took Place on A Special Day and in a Special Place
Polis and Reis got married at CU-Boulder because that’s where Reis went to college. They also chose to have the ceremony on the 18th anniversary of the day they went on their first date.
Polis said, “We went to the Boulder Bookstore and then out to dinner.”
After their first date, they went to Denver for an annual science fiction and fantasy convention.
“That was the first time we spent like two days together talking about science fiction, fantasy, and all those great things,” said Polis, who has made it a tradition to use quotes from Star Trek and Lord of the Rings in his State of the State Addresses.
After knowing each other for about a year and a half, they moved in together. When they were just getting to know each other, Reis said that he didn’t see himself working in politics for the rest of his life. Polis was already on the Colorado Board of Education and working for an e-commerce startup called ProFlowers. He is a tech entrepreneur.
Reis, who studied English in college, said he wanted to go to graduate school and either teach at a university or get his writing published. So this was a big change from all of that.”
Reis stays out of the public eye in Colorado, but he said he came from a politically active family. He has been a supporter of animal welfare for a long time and has worked to get bills passed at the legislature.

A Pandemic Proposal
Polis asked Reis to marry him in December of last year when they were both sick with COVID-19. Reis’s health was getting worse.
The governor said, “I’ve thought about it for a while.” “I’d ordered the rings, which had a verse from Isaiah written on them, and I’d hidden them so they were ready to go. He was going to the hospital because he had COVID.
I mean, I thought he would probably get better, but you never know. As we leave the house to take him to the hospital, I thought it would be a good idea to give them something to remember.”
Polis said that their 7-year-old daughter was probably happier about the engagement and wedding than anyone else.
“She really wanted to be a flower girl. She has been prancing. She bought a wonderful dress. “She’s great.”
Their 9-year-old son is also happy, but he hasn’t been as sure about everything.
“Kids are so up-to-date that sometimes their answers to things are funny. Our son asked us straight out, “Why do people get married?” said Reis.
Reis said that he explained the legal rights that married people have and that it shows “how much you care about each other.”
Reis thought it was interesting that their wedding happened just hours before Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism. They wanted to include as many Jewish traditions as possible in the ceremony.
Yom Kippur is a day of repentance and fasting, which is what Reis meant by “giving up false vows.”
“Instead, we would make vows to each other, which is the most important kind of vow. To be together forever, to care about each other and help each other.”
Since the governor took office, Reis has been thought of as Colorado’s first gentleman, but Polis said that the wedding meant the world to them.
“People could say it took us 18 years, or you could say it took us six years,” he said, counting backward from the Obergefell v. Hodges decision. “But it was great to show how much we love each other with our family.”
