Even though the work and personal lives of the couple are tied together, Furnish makes sure to keep his own interests and career going. “It’s very important in a relationship that one person doesn’t lose themselves in the other,” he told The Guardian in 2001. “That’s easy to do if you’re with a celebrity.” “They already get so much respect and attention that it would be easy to think of yourself as their other half. But the person Elton fell in love with was not me. I had my own life and career. That would be the worst thing I could do.”
How did David Furnish and Elton John meet?
At a dinner party, John and Furnish met each other. John told Parade in 2010: “In 1993, I went back to my house in Windsor for a while.” “I wanted to meet new people, so I called a friend in London and asked, “Could you get some new people to come to dinner here on Saturday?” One of these guests was Furnish, who, according to the musician, “was very well dressed and very shy.” “We had dinner the next night. After that, we ended up making love. We fell quickly in love.”
When did Elton John and David Furnish get married?
John and Furnish got married for the first time in a civil ceremony on December 21, 2005. Only a few people were there. But when marriage between people of the same gender became legal in England in 2014, the couple decided to get married right away.
“It’s great that this law passed, and we should be happy about it,” John told the BBC. “We shouldn’t just say, ‘Well, we have a civil partnership. We’re not going to bother getting married.’ We will get married.” He did say, though, that civil partnerships had been very important in the past. “Our civil partnership was a huge step forward for people who have been fighting for it for a long time, especially in England in the 1960s and 1950s when it was hard to be gay and hard to be open about it. And it was a bad thing to do.”
