Where is Michelle Carter Now 2022: What Did Michelle Carter Do?

The focus of “The Girl From Plainville,” a new true-crime series on Hulu, is Michelle Carter, the young woman who was convicted of Conrad Roy III’s involuntary manslaughter in the now-famous “texting suicide” case.

The limited series, which stars Elle Fanning, Colton Ryan, and Chlo Sevigny, shows what happened before Roy’s suicide and Carter’s trial.

People were very interested in Carter’s trial because many people thought the case was on the edge of the law. Even though everyone agrees that Carter should not have done what she did to cause Roy’s death, her lawyers argued that she was not legally responsible.

Massachusetts doesn’t have a law that makes it illegal to force someone to kill themselves, but lawmakers are working on a law called “Conrad’s Law” that would do just that.

Carter was found guilty five years ago, and you might be wondering where the 25-year-old is now. Here’s what we know about Carter at the moment.

What Did Michelle Carter Do?

In 2012, Carter and Roy connected while taking separate family vacations to Florida. The two Massachusetts towns were an hour apart, but they started dating and kept a long-distance relationship going for about two years. 18-year-old Roy was discovered dead in his pickup truck in July 2014 after poisoning himself with carbon monoxide.

Carter, who was roughly an hour away from Roy’s location in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, at the time of his death, was eventually found to have been on the phone with him while he was dying but had not called for help.

In fact, the Washington Post claims that she texted Roy multiple times in the days leading up to his death, urging him to commit suicide.

Carter claimed to see Roy’s killing over the phone in court testimony (as reported by ABC), and texts from Carter supported this claim. Just two days after Roy’s passing, she wrote to a classmate, “I do hate myself, it’s my responsibility.” “I was speaking to him as he committed suicide.”

Carter was charged with voluntary manslaughter in February 2015. She was tried two years later, found guilty, and given a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence in June 2017. Later, that punishment was cut in half to 15 months.

Carter was granted good behavior and a four-month early release from the Bristol County Jail in Massachusetts in January 2020. She is still carrying out the terms of her five-year probationary sentence.

Carter has maintained a low profile despite having been released from prison more than two years ago. Despite HBO and Hulu creating content based on her story, the now 25-year-old has no identifying social media presence and hasn’t made any public statements. Her probation doesn’t expire until August 2022, therefore it’s reasonable to presume she stays in the country.

Given the media attention Carter receives, it is understandable why she chooses to remain out of the spotlight in 2022.

New episodes of “The Girl From Plainville” are available to watch on Hulu every Tuesday.
