Tiny Beautiful Things Brings Cheryl Strayed’s “dear Sugar” Column to Life
Tiny Beautiful Things is a forthcoming Hulu series based on a book culled from an anonymous online advice column. All of this may seem like an unusual path to television, but Cheryl Strayed has never taken the easy way out.
She began writing a column under the pen name “Dear Sugar” more than a decade ago when she was a struggling writer trying to make ends meet. Strayed didn’t have the time to write for free or the authority to impart wisdom, but she did it anyway, weaving her own harrowing life experiences into empathetic and essayistic responses that quickly made her an internet cult figure.
Wild, Strayed’s memoir about her life unraveling after the death of her mother when she was 22 and her decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail alone, added to her celebrity. Strayed discussed adapting Tiny Beautiful Things for the screen with Wild stars Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, who are also executive producers on the Hulu series, while filming Wild. “Each of these little letters that were written to me had so much life and story in it,” Strayed tells Vanity Fair.

“And the letters I wrote back were just full of all the things I like to see on television or in movies—the real stuff of life.” Strayed dabbled in scriptwriting over the years, and Witherspoon eventually introduced her to Liz Tigelaar, a veteran showrunner who’d previously collaborated with Witherspoon on Little Fires Everywhere.
“I had the impression she understood the heart of the book and that we were in good hands.”
