“Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives,” Netflix’s latest crime documentary, is presently airing on the streaming service and delves into one of New York City’s largest fraud scandals. Sarma Melngailis and Anthony Strangis, lovers-turned-business partners who defrauded investors and stole over $1 million from Melngailis’ renowned raw vegan restaurant Pure Food & Wine, are the focus of the documentary.
Melngailis and Strangis did not get away with their crimes, as both were captured in 2016, putting an end to their stealing spree. Melngailis was sentenced to four months in prison, but what became to her accomplice, Strangis? Here is the current location of Anthony Strangis.
Who is Anthony Strangis?
According to a source in Vanity Fair, Anthony Strangis endured tremendous problems as a child, including witnessing threatening battles between his parents and being shuttled between his parents’ homes following their divorce. Strangis married Stacy Avery after just a few months of dating as a young adult.
Avery claims that after she became pregnant, Strangis informed her he was “expected to inherit $5 million from an aunt” and then pawned all of her jewellery and electronics before abandoning her and their young boy. Prior to meeting Sarma Melngailis, Strangis served time in prison for impersonating a police officer and grand theft, according to The New York Post.
Where is Anthony Strangis Now?
Forbes reports that in March 2017 Anthony Strangis pled guilty to “four counts of grand theft in the fourth degree.” The charges included theft of $844,000 from investors and failure to pay $40,000 to 84 employees. According to the New York Daily News, Strangis was freed from New York’s Rikers prison in May 2017 after spending a year for his offences and was sentenced to five years of probation.
Melngailis filed for divorce from Strangis in 2018, and he has remained off the radar since the affair. In May 2022, his five-year probationary period will conclude.
