Channing Tatum, who made his directorial debut with Dog, revealed during the film’s promotion that the film is inspired by his own adventures with his actual puppy. However, unlike his tragic real-life road trip, Dog’s Lulu does not die.

Channing promoted Dog on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on February 8, 2022. The show’s host told the 41-year-old how difficult it is to predict which direction a film will take when a dog is involved. He claims that most of the time, things go wrong and the dog dies, leaving the audience in tears.

Channing responded, saying, “Everyone has been scarred by Marley and Me, I believe… Everyone I’ve told that I made a dog movie has said, ‘I’m not going to see it unless you tell me if the dog lives.'”

The Magic Mike star went on to say that he asked his loved ones why they wanted to know the ending, but he quickly discovered that they were less concerned about spoilers if it meant knowing that the adorable furball would survive. Fortunately, Channing confirmed that Dog has a “happy ending.”

The dog is the first movie that Tatum has made as a director, and he had to deal with a lot of challenges because of that. In the same interview with EW, Tatum talked about how the idea of making a small movie quickly turned into a much bigger job:

“We thought we were making a really good decision. We were just like, ‘Oh, it will be a really small little movie, really contained — me, a dog, in a car, on a road trip — small, little, attainable movie.
