Carrie Fisher beat out a number of Hollywood stars, including one of Roger Moore’s most famous Bond girls, to play Princess Leia in Star Wars.

Yesterday is Star Wars Day, and it’s also the day that Carrie Fisher’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will be put in place.

The 60-year-old actor died in 2016, after Episode VIII: The Last Jedi was finished, but before scenes from The Force Awakens that were cut were used in The Rise of Skywalker.

Debbie Reynolds’ daughter, Carrie Fisher, was cast as Princess Leia in George Lucas’ original 1977 classic when she was just 19 years old. Tragically, Debbie Reynolds died a day after her daughter.

In addition to having an affair with Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, on set, her role as Darth Vader’s daughter became a female icon.

Reports say that over two dozen actors tried out for the part, including Glenn Close, Farrah Fawcett, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, Sigourney Weaver, Lalla Ward, Cybill Shepherd, Anjelica Huston, Kim Basinger, Terri Nunn, Cindy Williams, Kathleen Turner, and Geena Davis.

On the other hand, Meryl Streep almost got the part. In 2015, Fisher said, “I’ve never heard that one. But Jodie Foster was willing, and that was the one I knew the most about. Jodie and Amy Irving. And I got it.”

In fact, after Fisher died, fans asked for Meryl Streep to play Leia in The Rise of Skywalker, but director J.J. Abrams used the parts that were cut out instead. One of Roger Moore’s most well-known Bond girls also tried out for the role of Leia.
