Johnny Depp was very emotional after the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

On the first night of the international film festival, which started on Tuesday, the actor’s French-language film, Jeanne Du Barry, which stars him as King Louis XV of France from September 1715 until his death in 1774, was shown for the first time. The film was directed by Mawenn.

Mawenn plays Jeanne du Barry, a woman from the working class who uses her smarts and beauty to move up the social ladder one rung at a time.” She finally “becomes King Louis XV’s favorite, but he doesn’t know that she’s a courtesan,” this makes him want to live again says Variety.

After the showing, the crowd gave the movie a seven-minute standing ovation. A clip from the screening, which was shared by Variety, showed that Depp, who is 59 years old, was crying.

Even though the movie hasn’t been released in the U.S. yet, its premiere at the festival comes almost a year after the controversial decision in Depp’s defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard over an opinion piece she wrote in 2018 about coming forward with domestic abuse claims.

People who are fans of Heard spoke out on social media about the film being at the festival. On Monday, the head of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Fremaux, talked to reporters about having Depp’s movie open at the festival.

“I don’t know how Johnny Depp is seen in the U.S. “To be honest, I only have one rule in my life, and that is that I have the freedom to think, speak, and act within the law,” Fremaux said.

“We wouldn’t be here talking about this if Johnny Depp wasn’t allowed to act in movies or if the movies themselves weren’t allowed to be made. So we watched Mawenn’s movie, which could have been in the competition.

She would have been the eighth woman to lead the show,” Fremaux said. “This [controversy] started when the movie was shown at Cannes. Everyone knew Johnny had made a movie in France, so they all knew what was going on… I don’t know why she chose him, but Mawenn would know.”

“I’m the last person you should talk to about everything else,” he said. “If there’s anyone in the world who didn’t care about this highly known trial, it was me. I have no idea what it is about. Johnny Depp as an actor is also important to me.”
