James Beard award-winning chef and cookbook author Naomi Pomeroy has passed away at the age of 49, according to multiple reports. Pomeroy’s family confirmed her death to Portland Monthly, stating that she drowned following an inner tubing accident over the weekend. KEZI reports says, that the accident occurred on the evening of July 13 while floating down the Willamette River.

Pomeroy was on the float with her husband, Kyle Linden Webster, and another unnamed person. The inner tubes, which were tied together, got snagged, leading to the tragic incident. While her husband and the third person survived, Naomi Pomeroy tragically drowned, according to The Oregonian.

The Benton County Oregon Sheriff’s Office is continuing efforts to recover Pomeroy’s body. Her death has deeply affected the Portland culinary and restaurant community, where she was a beloved and influential figure.

Naomi Pomeroy began her career in Portland and was known for her unique cooking style and talent. She received numerous awards and gained popularity through her cookbooks. Her sudden passing has left a profound impact on her family, friends, and fans.

sheriff Jef Van Arsdall told Eater over email, “Both yesterday and today, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office had staff . both Marine Patrol Deputies and Search and Rescue personnel, on the water, continuing the effort to recover the victim. Debris in river, currents, and ragged rocks, make it unsafe for divers to conduct any exploratory search under water. We will continue our efforts to recover the victim, to bring [closure] to the family and the community,”

She was also known for her appearance on Top Chef Masters. Early in her career, she was recognized as a rising star by magazines like Food & Wine and Oprah. In 2014, she won the James Beard Award for Best Chef Pacific Northwest. This summer, Pomeroy was set to host a dinner series called Garden Party with restaurateur Luke Dirks.

According to Portland Monthly, Pomeroy’s family has asked for privacy and has not announced plans for a memorial.
