Does the Cat Die in Evil Dead Rise? The Fate of the Feline Explained

0

Nearly every member of the apartment building shown in Evil Dead Rise has been killed by Deadites, although numerous viewers are inquiring about the fate of another character: the cat. While the Evil Dead franchise frequently annihilates humans to amplify gore, animals are seldom victims of the Deadites’ onslaughts.

In Evil Dead Rise, a cat may have been one of the franchise’s rare animal casualties, as the film’s conclusion leaves the animal’s fate uncertain.

Evil Dead Rise is the next installment in Sam Raimi’s esteemed horror franchise, reintroducing the series’ Deadites and signature excessive gore to theaters for the first time since the 2013 Evil Dead remake.

This installment of the film centers on a family residing in an apartment complex, and when three siblings confront the challenge of defeating their Deadite mother, their one savior is their Aunt Beth. While Beth successfully rescues the youngest child, Kassie, from Evil Dead Rise, it remains uncertain whether she was able to save the neighbor’s pet cat.

Is the Cat Killed in Evil Dead Rise?

At the beginning of Evil Dead Rise, Mr. Fonda’s cat tries to escape the haunted apartment building by climbing the vents. Although the cat is never observed again, the Deadite incarnation of Ellie acquires knowledge from the cat, opting to navigate the vents to infiltrate her children’s apartment.

It was assumed that Ellie had killed Mr. Fonda’s cat while in the vent; however, it has been revealed that the cat survived.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, director Lee Cronin of Evil Dead Rise affirmed that the cat survived the apartment building incident. Nevertheless, he observed that a prior version of the script contained a somewhat more macabre conclusion for the cat. According to Cronin:

It was written. It was depicted that [Ellie] is crawling through the [vent] and ends by eating the cat, thus swallowing its tail.

Lee Cronin notes that he has observed viewers often react negatively to the depiction of animal damage in films, which is why he assured that the cat emerged unscathed. Cronin envisioned a different strategy for the cat, which would have pioneered new developments in the franchise.

Why Lee Cronin’s Original Plan For Cat Changed?

Although the survival of the cat is good news, the result for Mr. Fonda’s pet was nearly entirely different. During the same interview, Lee Cronin clarified that Evil Dead Rise was initially intended to feature a sequence showing Ellie as she completes the act of swallowing the cat’s tail.

Cronin proposed a more intriguing alternative in which Beth and Kassie would crawl down a hatch, only to encounter a Deadite incarnation of the cat.

Regrettably, some sequences were left out due to financial limitations. Evil Dead Rise had a budget of approximately $20 million, and the inclusion of a Deadite cat would likely have necessitated significant CGI, leading to its exclusion.

This was likely advantageous, given Evil Dead Rise predominantly utilizes practical effects, a defining characteristic of the Evil Dead franchise.

Why a Deadite Cat Could Have Been an Interesting Twist in Evil Dead Rise?

If Cronin’s first concept for a Deadite cat happened, it would have marked an entertaining leap for the Evil Dead franchise overall. The ability of Deadites to infect animals significantly increases their threat level, as it expands the number of potential targets.

The introduction of a Deadite Rottweiler or Deadite grizzly bear elevates the horror factor within the genre, beyond the human distortions exemplified by Evil Dead’s Taker of Souls or Evil Dead Rise’s Marauder. Evil Dead Rise explored the concept, and subsequent installments may successfully realize it.

What is Evil Dead Rise About?

Evil Dead Rise (2023) is a supernatural horror film and the fifth entry in the Evil Dead franchise. Directed by Lee Cronin, the film transposes the chilling premise of the Evil Dead series to an urban environment, diverging from the rural settings of earlier installments.

The story focuses on two sisters, Beth and Ellie, who reunite in Los Angeles following years of separation. Ellie, a mother of three, resides in a dilapidated apartment complex with her children. Upon the discovery of a mysterious tome, the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, in the building’s basement, a demonic entity is unleashed that possesses Ellie.

As Ellie yields to the demonic entity, her body morphs into a conduit of dread, and the apartment metamorphoses into a domicile of nightmares.

The picture intensifies as the demonic beings unleash chaos onto the apartment complex, resulting in a fierce struggle for survival. As the malevolent force intensifies, Beth must safeguard her nieces and nephews from the unyielding evil that seeks to engulf them entirely.

Evil Dead Rise amalgamates traditional horror with novel, disquieting dread in an urban setting, while preserving the franchise’s hallmark gore and macabre humor. The film is a harrowing examination of familial bonds, survival, and the terrors unleashed by the Necronomicon.
