The Sherlock Holmes film series is a new mystery series based on the adventures of the classic character Sherlock Holmes created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. There are many famous actors in the movies, such as Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Kelly Reilly, and many more.
Due to Guy Ritchie’s direction and highly stylized approach to the material, the Sherlock Holmes franchise has made a name for itself as a unique take on the character from classic literature, with a focus on how Holmes thinks about different situations. So far, there have been two movies in the series.
Soon after the second movie came out, it was said that a third movie was already being made. But that was in 2011. Now, after more than a decade, it doesn’t look like the movie is any closer to being made than when it was first announced. Everyone wants to know if Sherlock Holmes 3 is still going to happen.
When Will Sherlock Holmes 3 Be Released?
As of February 2023, we don’t know when Sherlock Holmes 3 will come out, but we do know that it is being made. The third Sherlock Holmes movie was announced soon after Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows came out in 2011. That was more than a decade ago.
Since then, we’ve heard little bits and pieces about the movie, but it hasn’t changed much. From what we’ve read online, it sounds like the script, which has been rewritten many times over the past ten years, is to blame for the delay. We also don’t think that Downey Jr.’s main role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Law’s supporting role has made things any easier.

What is the Plot of Sherlock Holmes 3?
We can only assume that the third Sherlock Holmes film will begin where the second one left off, with Watson believing that the great detective had died. Watson, presumably, will subsequently learn that the stories of Sherlock’s death were overblown, and the team will return to battling crime.
A Game of Shadows concluded with the titular Sherlock Holmes realizing he couldn’t overcome his foe Moriarty (Jared Harris) and instead flipping the board, hurling both of them off Reichenback Falls. While the film ended with the predictable reveal that Holmes had lived, Watson was left in the dark.
However, it is difficult to predict what crime they will solve in the detective film. So far, the Sherlock Holmes films have not been afraid to depart from the accepted canon to present their storylines. If we had to guess, we’d say they’ll take up the running theme of the bad guys trying to start WWI, but that’s just a guess.
Who is Coming Back for Sherlock Holmes 3?
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have both said they will be back as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson if there is a third movie, which seems likely since it wouldn’t be the same without their bromance.

We don’t know yet if Kelly Reilly (Watson’s wife Mary), Stephen Fry (Sherlock’s brother Mycroft), or Eddie Marsan (Inspector Lestrade) will come back, but we’d be surprised if they didn’t at least make a cameo. At the end of A Game of Shadows, it looked like Jared Harris’s Professor James Moriarty had died, but we wouldn’t bet against him coming back.
