Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr., better known as Mika, was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on August 18, 1983. His parents are Michael Holbrook Penniman, an American born in Israel, and Mary Joan Mouakad, an American of Lebanese origin.
His father was a banker. Yasmine, one of Mika’s four siblings, painted the covers for his albums “Life in Cartoon Motion” and “The Boy Who Knew Too Much.” Mika has four siblings: Paloma, Yasmine, Zuleika, and Fortuné. William Frederick Penniman III, a diplomat, was his paternal grandfather.
Early Years and Education
Mika’s parents moved from war-torn Lebanon to Paris, France, when he was a newborn, and in 1990, when the Gulf War broke out, Mika’s father was stuck in the US embassy in Kuwait for seven months while on a business trip. He had to find new work when he got home to his family in Paris, so they eventually went to London.
At the age of 7, Mika composed his first song, “Angry,” which was an instrumental piano composition. He suffered from dyslexia and faced bullying as a student at the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle in London. Alla Ardakov (Ablaberdyeva), a Russian opera soprano, taught him music when his mother decided to homeschool him.
Mika made his theatrical debut at the Royal Opera House as a chorus member in the Richard Strauss opera “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” while he was a student with the London-based Royal Opera. He participated in a production of “The Pilgrim’s Journey” by Vaughan Williams when he was 15 years old.
Mika subsequently went back to school and was the director of the St. Philip’s Chorus while attending Kensington’s St. Philip’s School (Schola Cantorum). Later, he played the lead in a number of schools plays at Westminster School in London. Mika attended the London School of Economics for one day before being admitted to the Royal College of Music.
He left the Royal College of Music before receiving his degree so that he could work with Casablanca Records to create his debut album. “Relax, Take It Easy,” his debut single from 2006, was selected Single of the Week by BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills.
