Chris Hayes was born on February 28, 1978, in the Norwood region of Riverdale in the Bronx. Chris Hayes is one of the sons of Roger and Geri Hayes and he has two other siblings. His father is an Irish Catholic origin while his mother is of Italian descent.
His father spent most time leading community organizing at the Community Service Society of New York and was also the assistant commissioner for the NYC Department of Health. His mother was a school teacher and worked at the NYC Department of Education.

Chris Hayes’s career began in August 2001 and was a contributor to the independent weekly newspaper Chicago Reader. He was tasked with covering local and national politics for about four years. In 2003 he also worked with These Times newspaper.
He then worked at a Schumann Center from 2005 to 2006 at These Times and from 2006 through 2007 at Hayes Puffin Foundation where he wrote for The Nation Institue. He was named as the Washington D.C editor replacing David Corn.
He appeared as a guest host on The Rachel Show in 2010 while Maddow was in Afghanistan. He hosted several other MSNBC shows such as The Fd Show, The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, and Countdown with Keith Olbermann.
He began a podcast in May 2018 called Why Is This Happening? Where he featured several influential political figures, journalists, and writers. The first live podcast was aired in November 2018 at Congregation Beth Elohim, in Brooklyn New York where he features Ta-Nehisi Coates.
