The year 2022 will see the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character.
A Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures production, “Doctor Strange 2” is the MCU’s 28th feature film overall and the sequel to 2016’s “Doctor Strange” MCU.
Directed by Sam Raimi and written by Michael Waldron, the film also features Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, and Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams in addition to Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange.
Strange defends America Chavez Gomez, a young woman with the ability to travel between dimensions, from Wanda Maximoff Lupita Nyong’o in the film Olsen. Scott Derrickson, who directed and co-wrote “Doctor Strange,” intended to start work on a sequel to the film by October 2016.
When Benedict Cumberbatch’s return was announced in December 2018, he signed on to continue in his director role. The film’s title and Olsen’s participation were both announced in July of 2019; by October of that year, Jade Halley Bartlett had been hired to pen the script.
In January of 2020, Derrickson announced his resignation as a director due to “creative differences.” The following month, Waldron and Raimi came on board to remake the film, incorporating horror elements familiar to Raimi from previous projects and casting Maximoff as the film’s antagonist to continue her story from the TV series WandaVision 2021.
Production on the film’s London set began in November 2020 but was halted in January 2021 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. In March of 2021, production picked back up where it left off, wrapping up in Somerset by mid-April.
Both Surrey and Los Angeles saw some gunfire as well. Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6, 2022, following its premiere at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on May 2, 2022.
The film’s direction by Raimi, the visuals, and Olsen’s performance were all praised, while the plot was the primary target of the critics’ ire. With $954 million in worldwide receipts, the film is the third highest-grossing release of 2022.
Plot Summary
While looking for the Book of Vishanti in the space between universes, America Chavez and a version of Stephen Strange are being pursued by a demon. After killing Strange, Chavez accidentally opens a portal to Earth-616, where the version of Strange, aided by Sorcerer Supreme Wong, saves Chavez from another demon.
Due to his familiarity with witchcraft runes, Strange seeks advice from Wanda Maximoff, only to learn that she is behind the attacks.
When Maximoff became the Scarlet Witch after acquiring the Darkhold, she thought that by mastering Chavez’s abilities, she could finally reunite with Billy and Tommy, the children she had created in Westview.
Maximoff attacks Kamar-Taj, killing many sorcerers because Strange refuses to hand over Chavez to him. Maximoff uses the Darkhold to “dream walk,” assuming the identities of her Earth-838 double, Billy and Tommy, and their comfortable suburban lifestyle
Chavez and Strange arrive there by accident. To end the dream walk and destroy the Darkhold, a surviving sorceress gives her life. To restore the dream walk, an enraged Maximoff orders Wong to take him there.
Mount Wundagore is where the Darkhold’s power originates. While on a rescue mission, Doctor Strange and Maria Chavez are captured by Earth-838’s Sorcerer Supreme, Karl Mordo, and presented to the Illuminati, which includes Mordo, Peggy Carter, and Blackagar Boltagon, Maria Rambeau, Reed Richards, and Charles Xavier.
They say that Strange of Earth-838 triggered an “incursion” that destroyed the universe by carelessly using their universe’s Darkhold to defeat Thanos. The Illuminati, after vanquishing Thanos, put an end to their own Strange so he couldn’t do any more damage.
Mordo thinks Strange from Earth-616 is just as dangerous, but before they can pass judgment, Maximoff restores her dream walk at Mount Wundagore and teleports her into the body of her Earth-838 counterpart.
Except for Mordo, whom Strange subdues, she eliminates every single member of the Illuminati before escaping with Chavez. Strange’s ex-girlfriend Christine Palmer, a scientist for the Illuminati, helps him and Palmer get away from the authorities on Earth-838.
Attempting to find the antidote to the Darkhold, the Book of Vishanti, Strange, Chavez, and Palmer venture into the Multiverse, only to have Maximoff appear and destroy it.
She then takes control of Chavez’s mind and uses her abilities to transport everyone else to a universe devastated by an incursion.
After defeating the version of Strange corrupted by his universe’s Darkhold, which caused the universe’s destruction, Strange uses the artifact to dream walk into the body of his dead Earth-616 counterpart.
While Maximoff is attempting to steal Chavez’s abilities, Strange rescues her with the help of Wong and then encourages her to use them. As she takes Maximoff to Earth-838, she witnesses Billy and Tommy shrink away from her in fear and sob for their real mother.
Maximoff comes to her senses and uses her powers to bring down Mount Wundagore, ostensibly sacrificing herself while also destroying all copies of the Darkhold across the multiverse.
Strange and Palmer are sent back to their own dimensions by Chavez. Later on, the surviving sorcerers, now including Chavez, fix up Kamar-Taj and carry on with their training.
After using the Darkhold and dream walking into a corpse, Strange acquires the third eye. In a scene set during the credits, Strange is approached by a sorceress who informs him that his actions have triggered an incursion, which he must then help to fix.
After she enters the Dark Dimension, Strange goes there with her.

What Happened in The Post-Credit Scene?
There are two credits scenes after the film’s finale. One is a tease that mocks eager fans and the other sees a new character introduced into the MCU.
In the mid-credits of Doctor Strange 2, Strange’s third eye is revealed indicating that he too has been affected by the Darkhold.
That’s not the only shocker. We also see Clea played by Charlize Theron who is making her MCU debut arrive in New York.
Clea is the sister of Dormammu and the Sorcerer Supreme in the Dark Dimension in the comics. Dressed in a purple costume, the character tells Strange that he’s needed again, likely to deal with all the multiversal damage from his adventure.
Doctor Strange opens his creepy third eye and the two open up a portal to embark on another adventure, no doubt. This might take them into the Dark Dimension. So he isn’t quite done with the multiverse.
