Kelly Slater was born Robert Kelly Slater in Cocoa Beach, Florida, on February 11, 1972. Judy, his mother, was a firefighter and EMT, and Stephen, his father, operated a bait shop.
Kelly has two brothers, Stephen and Sean, who began surfing at age five. Kelly had won multiple age-division races on the Atlantic coast by age ten and earned the age-division U.S.
Championship title in 1984. In 1986, he finished third in the international amateur championships in England, and the following year, he won Australia’s Pacific Cup junior championship.
Kelly Slater’s Surfing Career
Slater turned pro in 1990, winning the Body Glove Surfboat. He’s been dubbed “King Kelly,” “The GOAT,” and “the Michael Jordan of surfing.”
He won the Pipeline Masters in 1992 and was ranked #6 in 1993. He won the World Surf League and the Triple Crown of Surfing from 1994 to 1999.
Kelly was the winner of the Marui Masters, the Quiksilver Pro, the Coke Classic, the Billabong Pro, and the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro.
After winning the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco, he won his 11th ASP world title in 2011. Slater’s love of surfing led him to join the Ocean Advocacy Advisory Board of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
The United States House of Representatives recognized him in H. Res. 792 in 2010 for his “extraordinary and exceptional achievements in the world of surfing.” A statue of Kelly has been erected in Cocoa Beach since November 6, 2010, after he won his tenth world title.
