New Zealand’s Law Will Make It Illegal To Smoke
The government of New Zealand has made it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy cigarettes for the rest of their lives. The Smoke-Free Environments and Regulated Products (Smoking Tobacco) Amendment Bill, which aims to make New Zealand smoke-free by 2025, has been passed in New Zealand.

How The Bill Works
The goal of the bill is to stop selling tobacco to anyone born after January 1, 2009, and to cut down on the number of stores that sell cigarettes. The bill has support from both parties in New Zealand’s parliament, and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wants to limit how much nicotine can be in smokeless tobacco products.
If the bill passes, there will be about one-tenth as many tobacco stores in the United States as there are now.

The Benefits of The Bill
This will save the lives of thousands of people and save the health system an extra $5 billion because they won’t have to treat diseases caused by smoking, like many types of cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and amputations.
The law is meant to stop the high number of deaths caused by smoking in New Zealand, which affects the native Mori population more than other groups.
